Assassin moth price jump

Well is you are seriously interested, I still have a quote that is good for another 3 weeks ;)
It's like a restaurant - they make all the money on the sodas. You don't really need a soda, but if they put one in the Happy Meal they sell a lot of them and it's more profitable.

The previous price was ridiculously low and did not make sense. They have to make some money somewhere or they will not be around long.

Nige will you have the Assassin before the Mock2? Maybe I'll buy the Assassin to have a more normal boat to sail, but really I should keep soldiering on with the tilt a whirl.

No-one's answered this question yet:

If you ordered one before the change, and pay the original price, do you get the original assassin foils or the new HM ones?

Unknown boat, reputation

Unknown quality, strength

Unknown sails

Unknown foils, speed, strength

I guess people wanting to save a bunch of cash are prepared to chance these things.

From Darren - "Yes all Assassins get the new Holroyd high mod foils, any boats that were sent out with old foils will be replaced with new ones at no cost, we want to support the people that got in early and supported us."

So, long and short - even if you don't get the new foils to begin with, you'll get them eventually.

Now THAT'S a good deal

Update on the site (hope its not old news) and now they're offering a 'no fluff' package which has the complete boats (both models) with all the same basic specs but no covers etc. Includes HM Holroyd foils. NZ$14500 for SS, NZ$15200 for GRS.

Unknown boat? Seems to me most people in the mothosphere knows something about it. It's not unknown, it's just new. Everyone's new at some stage in this game.

Unknown quality? Darren's been the BR dealer and warranty repairer for the last 3 years in NZ. He's also spent a very large proportion of his life building quality boats. I don't think quality or stength will be an issue.

Unknown sails? North... I think not. Southern Spars? Nope. The Doyles on the SS's from the little I've seen (which can be optioned up to norths by the way) look very much like the bladerider standard X-ply sails. They're meant to be slightly cheaper, slightly heavier, a good introductory sail.

Unknown foils - well... yes. The only boats currently out have modified BR foils and that's hardly an 'unknown'. The guy designing the new foils is widely considered to be a leading CFD expert and foil guru for Team NZ. Strength - I don't think that'll be an issue. If anything the early ones may wind up a little heavier than optimal to avoid the early production blues. Also, HM pre-preg carbon is incredibly stiff... I don't see them snapping anytime soon.

7 weeks till mine's due... I'll do a Mach2-style foil strength test if that'll stop people doubting the boats.

I Quote Holly again:

"All our boats will have the new designed foils, any sent without will be changed free of charge, but if you order a boat now it will have the new foils"

I think this means they will swap, you sen the old ones back and they will send you new ones?

Or can you keep the old ones?

I was never ordering one of each, I was only going to order an assassin if someone picked up my M2 order but it didnt quite happen so I am sticking the the M2. (bummer huh ;)

They seem to be happy with the margins (gone up a bit with the new foils) so I do not think they where throwing it in there for margin, just putting in a standard price that met the current BR deals on content. The 'no fluff' setup is back though so that is cool.

Re the concerns over quality, I am sure there will be a few teething issues but there is a LOT to be said for the quality of boats that are hand built by boat builders. I would not be overly concerned about the speed of the foils as they know the BR setup/design very well and it will be evolution from that.

We will know very soon whether they are up to scratch ( http://www.mothworlds2009.org ) and if they are, it will be a great thing for the class to have another good builder.

Thanks for checking on this. I put down a deposit last week just before the price correction ;) . I had my fingers crossed that my September delivery would include the new foils. I'm not surprised about the bump in price It was only a mater of time.

OK, so this is starting to look interesting..... Great comparison of technology between VRx and Assassin written by Nige a few posts back. But has anyone done any two or even three boat testing VRx vs Assassin vs Mach 2 or do we need to wait until the Worlds? The price point is amazing especially when you consider you get a North V8 plus a SS rig in the GRS That alone has to be worth USD2500.

My worry is that at least with a Bladerider you have Moth where the bugs, both set up and construction, have been pretty much worked out and for the "non rock stars" amongst us, you can jump on and have some great racing without too much development / re build time. However in a new design / build how much time will be spent on the bleeding edge rather than the cutting edge? I suspect that each new design is learning from previous and getting more reliable quicker, plus with the number of good sailors entering the class, set up and tuning guides become availabe much quicker.

At the end of the day, this is awesome for the class, 3 good builders (4 inc Fastacrafgt) with well thought out boats that you can sail straight out of the box!

I can count 5: Assasin, Aardvark, Bladerider, Mach 2 and Fastacraft.

There may be more like the French Sphinx, Full Force or a reborn Rapter... but I have not heard much about these for a while.

And then there are the home build batches: Alphas, Hungry Beavers ......

You tend to get what you pay for but the Assassin does should like a really good deal. I would like to see one, but I do not think any are going to the Euros so will have to wait till Sep when one comes to Austria.

Forgot about Aardvark in this list. He seems to be going incredibly quickly, beating the Mach2 last weekend. Needs to get the word out more - similar price to the Assassins but I am not sure how fast he can build.

I think 3 is the correct number for builders who can put out a significant number of boats but I would love to take a close look at the Ninja.

Fastacraft? New foils right? Who has them? Whats the scoop, I have not heard anything.

Fastacraft - new foils right? Has anyone used them? Is anyone decent sailing them at the moment? Great boats but I think John is going to struggle to get orders?

Just got a reply on the issue of the BR foils for those who get the early boats - "They can sell their old assassin foils to their Bladerider mates!".

If I get the current foils with my boat, I'll be keeping them as practice foils. If not, I'll still be stoked.

The deal is looking better and better for those who got in early! :)

As for the doyle sail, well as I said I haven't seen much of it - I know what the foot looks like but that's about it.

Wicked... that's your boat, did you get the Doyle with it or did Darren just use it to test rig the boat?

I should be getting my centerboard in the next 4 weeks and the current batch of boats is going out with the new foils too. Rudder mould is done, centerboard to follow soon. I'll have some photos on my webiste soon. www.luka-damic.com

John has boat orders, but no fancy website (yet) to promote his product.
