Accounting for todays pop that would be 2100 deaths- 36,000 cases

Premier WA, worst effected state was sir Ross McClarty. he didn't resign..

And of course the PM was the sainted Robert Menzies.

I cant see any premier resigned and Menzies certainly didn't.

Good luck in finding any evidence for that, official documentation about that epidemic is woefully inadequate.

I've even searched Trove and newspapers at the time seem focused on the epidemic in relation to The Queen's visit and Menzies arranging for her to sleep and eat on the Royal Yacht while "visiting" WA for fear of contagion.

All I'm saying is that this is new, back in March/April everyone was working with limited knowledge and "winging it" to a certain extent.

There were fuck ups like the Ruby Princess and Melbourne Quarantine, the Age care deaths all over the country.(Can't wait for the response from Dark Knight etc when Fed Labor demand a Royal Commission into that one, It's a Federal responsibility).mistakes were to be expected. Nothing was perfect.

I think overall and compared to other countries all our politicians handled it well. 

Now we know more and hindsight is a wonderful thing. But until this is "over" or at least we (especially Victoria) have returned to semi normal, please just let those we elected do what they need to do now and not be distracted or waste their valuable time..and sleep with half arsed enquiries that opposition parties will then deem inadequate and insist on Royal commissions. (and I mean all states and the Feds will go through this, it's what we do! 

We can have the Royal Commissions etc later.

Nationally polio peak was around 350 one year and less than 700 total multiple years as you state.  

784 dead (88 rest of Australia) Andrews has the national record post WWII incl polio plus banged that away in less 6 months, the majority in less than two.

The Royal Commission into Aged Care's senior counsel assisting Peter Rozen QC said hearings over the coming days would examine whether more could have been done to protect residents.

He said the commission would also examine whether greater preparation could have saved lives.

The commission heard disagreements between the NSW and Federal governments adversely impacted the handling of a coronavirus outbreak in a Western Sydney nursing home.

Mr Rozen told the hearing that the problems stemmed from the fact that the health systems are run by the state governments while aged care is managed by the Commonwealth.

"We surely have no hope of fighting COVID-19 and protecting the residents in our nursing homes if the various levels of governments are not working together," he said.

He said the inquiry would look into whether there had been sufficient planning to decide who would call the shots in the event of an outbreak.

He said the outbreak at Newmarch House in Caddens, where 17 residents died after contracting COVID-19, suggested this planning was not adequately addressed.

The Commission also heard there was a "stand-off" between NSW Health and the Federal Government over whether residents who tested positive to COVID-19 should be transferred to hospital.

An email appearing to quote NSW Health noted: "The preference is not to decant residents into hospitals given the precedent it would set."
