I didn't pay much attention but weren't the quarantine facilities desigh ed with repurposing to public housing and student accommodation in mind?

Well it's +100km from Brisvegas, so can't be used for student accommodation and doesn't look like it can be repurposed into public housing. Another quality project delivered by QLD Labor.

All states maintained quarantine stations back in the old days. The one in Adelaide got turned into a museum. All the others got shut down or repurposed as they were thought to be no longer necessary. What price now?

It is clear that parts of Oz are going to have to deal with flooding and/or bushfires every other year. Where could all the flood and bushfire victims go if they need emergency accommodation?

in reference to the floods & fires - I'd wager more people would rather the government spend on preventative measures or relocation schemes than a white elephant facility in the middle of nowhere.
by the time it's actually needed, expect it'll be deteriorated and need another hundred million in maintenance.

I don’t know the design brief, but the real failing would appear to be lack of flexibility and the ability of such facilities to be easily repurposed or shifted to suit the crisis of the moment.

soon? I doubt it.
don't see how a gussied up detention center is going to be the difference even if there is.
current capacity (stage 1) for the one in Danistan is 500 beds, which is nowhere near the daily case numbers being reported.
It is about incoming visitors from overseas or interstate, and the use of not fit for purpose quarantine hotels, nothing to do with local transmission cases.

If they started building them mid 2020 then there would have been so value to them, but they instead waited until mid 2021 once the vaccine roll out was well under way and we had our post plan.
if Dan and Anna are lucky we’ll have another pandemic and an excuse to use them in a year or two. The previous time we needed quarantine facilities was 100 years ago and even if the next one is in a fraction of the time, how much will it cost to maintain them until then.
They should have at least located them and designed them to have a life after the pandemic.
I think Dan and Anna built them for show and for their next elections, blaming the Feds for why they spent the money.
they will both be retired and living on their cushy pensions when the camps are buldozed
We will also still have a migrant and refugee problem, and will need emergency/temporary accommodation for them, just like we did after WW2?
Shoving refugees into “Hotel Quarantine” for more than 5 years isn’t a cheap or humane option?

that still doesn't help the argument.
last December, Melb airport recorded 1,115,233 transfers. That's an average of just under 36k people per day.
and there's 500 beds?
and the people have to stay there for how long?
its hard to see this as being anything other than a colossal white elephant.
at the cost of over half a billion dollars that maybe could have been better directed to our medical system.

Given the state governments history of miss-use of funds, unethical behaviour and culture of cover-ups, I would not put it past Dan for wasting tax payers money purely for political gain.
