Common sense and reason have been missing in action for quite some time.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has used a keynote speech at the region's top security summit to urge China to reopen high-level communication channels with the United States, saying both great powers need to establish "guardrails" to ensure catastrophic conflict does not break out.

Key points:

  • Mr Albanese said reopening channels of communication was not about containment but rather preventing "a worst-case scenario"
  • He said a diplomatic freeze only helped to breed suspicion and it led to nations assuming the worst of each other
  • Mr Albanese also delivered a veiled warning to China over Taiwan, while defending the AUKUS pact

Mr Albanese delivered the warning in front of a high-powered audience of leaders, military officers and diplomats — including both US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and China's Defence Minister Li Shangfu — at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore on Friday night.

Tensions have again been rising between Beijing and Washington following their latest military encounter in the South China Sea, and Mr Li turned down an offer from Mr Austin to meet on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue.

But Mr Albanese told the gathering that dialogue was an "essential precondition" for peace, stressing that Australia supported the Biden's administration's "renewed efforts" to open reliable channels of communications with Beijing.

"The alternative, the silence of the diplomatic deep freeze, only breeds suspicion, only makes it easier for nations to attribute motive to misunderstanding, to assume the worst of one another," he told the gathering.

"This isn't about a policy of containment, it's not a question of placing obstacles in the way of any nation's progress or potential.

"This is a matter of simple, practical structures to prevent a worst-case scenario."

Odd isn't that when Scomo talked tough about the Chinese she was appalled.
Her hard on for Brittney Higgins might be going limp...but the again she never lets reality get in the way of spotting a lying little cunt.

Explosive texts casts doubt on Katy Gallagher’s Brittany Higgins’ claims

Leaked texts suggest Finance Minister Katy Gallagher was aware of the Brittany Higgins rape allegation before the story broke.

An explosive new tranche of leaked texts suggests Finance Minister Katy Gallagher was tipped off about Brittany Higgins’ rape allegation before the story broke and raises questions over previous statements she made about the extent of her knowledge.
On February 11, 2021, four days before the story broke Mr Sharaz messaged Ms Higgins to say: “Katy is going to come to me with some questions you need to prepare for … She’s really invested now ha ha.”
In response to a claim a Labor senator had tipped off Defence Minister Linda Reynolds, Senator Gallagher was indignant in June, 2021.

“No-one had any knowledge. How dare you,’’ Senator Gallagher said.

Gallagher mis-lead the house and should resign. This whole Saga has exposed just how far the left were willing to go to embarrass the Morrison government. They were quite happy to put an innocent man in jail just to shove it up a couple of LNP ministers. It also shows just how fucking stupid that lying little POS is in letting Wilkinson, Gallagher and Shane Drumgold manipulate her.
This inquiry is gold.

‘Feed everything to Katy’

When Ms Higgins suspected someone from the Prime Minister’s office had been “backgrounding” against them, there was a discussion about involving Senator Gallagher again.

“You may as well feed everything you have to Katy,” she said. “The sooner we can nip it in the bud the better. Especially if we can call them out by name.”

Mr Sharaz responded: “I’ve texted katy and SHY (Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young).”

David Sharaz’ fury over Scott Morrison

The texts reveal Mr Sharaz’s fury towards former prime minister Scott Morrison, at one point admitting “I still hate the c...”.

Ms Higgins says: “He’s about to be f..ked over. Just wait. We’ve got him”.

Albo rejects claims he was approached

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese rejects claims that he was enlisted by Ms Higgins and Mr Sharaz as a “friendly MP”.

Asked whether he had been contacted by Channel 10’s Lisa Wilkinson or anyone else associated with Ms Higgins to publicise the case in question time he responded “No.”

However, the text messages obtained by The Australian suggest Mr Sharaz was in contact with Mr Albanese, although not until April, 2021.

On April 16, 2021 Mr Sharaz texted Ms Higgins: “So Albo gave me his number – he just came in to do the breakfast show – and says if you meet with ScoMo to let him know and he’ll fly to Canberra to be there if you want to meet with him too.”

Ms Higgins responded: “For sure. I have no qualms meeting with Albo.”

Bwhahahahahahahahahahahahaaaaahahahahhahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahhah!

Detective investigating Brittany Higgins’ rape allegation complained he ‘didn’t like being threatened’ after call with her boyfriend

A detective who investigated Brittany Higgins’ rape allegation complained he “didn’t like being threatened” after a phone call with her partner David Sharaz.

A detective who investigated Brittany Higgins’ rape allegation complained he “didn’t like being threatened” after a phone call with her partner David Sharaz.
In fresh witness statements released by the Board of inquiry into the conduct of police, prosecutors and the Victim of Crime Commissioner Heidi Yates, the distress of the senior police officer has been laid bare.

The inquiry has previously heard evidence from Detective Superintendent Scott Moller that shortly after Mr Sharaz’s phone call to Detective Inspector Marcus Boorman, the instructions were delivered to charge Bruce Lehrmann.

He said Mr Sharaz threatened to go public with complaints over the speed of the rape investigation and sent emails to the detective investigating the case and the Victims of Crime Commissioner Heidi Yates.

‘Disturbed and disappointed’: Brittany Higgins’ letter to Lisa Wilkinson

Brittany Higgins wrote to Lisa Wilkinson to say she was “disturbed” Channel 10 proposed to air more material from her original interview.

Brittany Higgins wrote to Lisa Wilkinson just days after her first interview aired, warning she was “disturbed and disappointed” that The Project wanted to broadcast more unaired material.
Fresh leaks of private correspondence originally provided under subpoena during the criminal trial have outlined the tensions that flared in February of 2021.

In the letter, obtained by The Australian newspaper, Ms Higgins raises concerns that Ms Wilkinson is planning to air a second program based on footage not used in the first.

Ms Higgins writes that she is “disturbed and disappointed” by the plan, and raises concerns that “you have gone ahead and put one together anyway”.

In the correspondence, from February 20, Ms Higgins threatens that if Ms Wilkinson proceeds, she will publicly condemn The Project.

“As I discussed earlier in the week with your producer Angus when I declined his approach for a second interview, I do not want to participate in any further media interviews at this stage,” Ms Higgins writes.

I think what Australia is doing here is really positive. The US and China, do not have to be at odds on everything. Apparently, there is a statue of General Chennault in Yunan-so somebody in China does remember when the USA was a friend of China. Russia doesn't seem to have much luck invading a nation they have a border with. Therefore; I suppose the 100 miles of ocean between the two Chinas has to give pause to the mainland.

Must be sad bing you - with nothing else to do but......
It must be sad to have such a thin skin.
Is it just you and Grr, or do Americans collectively have some reflex that twitches when any Prime Minister or other head of state offers advice or censure?
Dog forbid that anyone but the mighty USA should have the nerve to censure another country for wagging their manhoods in a sensitive environment.

you mean coughing politely in the background.

Yes, the Australian PM is correct, lines of dialog should be kept open. Too bad not everyone agrees, “Mr Li turned down an offer from Mr Austin to meet on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue.”

And too bad the usa is insisting on a meeting between the military men and China is refusing.
A meeting on highly contentious issues with translators between generals without diplomats. What could possibly go wrong?

So you don’t want communications?
Of course, but between reasonable people on both sides without a military mindset. Both Li and Austin are generals. Not exactly dove material and unlikely to be 100% fluent in each others language. Did you understand what our PM said? If you didn't, I'll take the point.

Why do you assume there wouldn’t be translators? Meet on the sidelines does not mean meet alone. Do you really think either country would have it’s too general meet alone?

(Comment withdrawn, SFB clearly did say “with translators,” but I misread it).

Of course there would be translators, but that's not the point. I dont want military guys in dialogue. Why should these basically economic and border issues be negotiated/discussed/ settled by the military? Armies are a tool of diplomats not versed in diplomacy. I don't understand why the USA want's Austen to be doing the negotiating. More dick waving I suspect.
AKA Gunboat diplomacy.
