I'm looking for the study are report that was done down under where the average bloke on the street was asked "What do you think when you hear the word 'Sailing?'"

Can you provide the link.

Thanks.

Hi Glenn:  Can't help out on finding a copy of the Australian study.  However, Bob Johnstone did a similar study here

in the US some years ago.  I never got a copy of the study, but I heard him present the findings at several US Sailing

Conferences.  You might want to contact him.

I don't think either of these will be it, but might give you a lead

It would help if you could remember who you think did it, the context, whether it was sailing specific and when

When Aussie Joe Public is asked what they think of when they hear the word "sailing":

Here's the summary:

"Bunch of rich wankers"

"Taking up public beach real estate"

"Won't let us launch our tinnies at their ramps"

"Won't let us fish from their jetties"

Yeah....I reckon that covers it for the average Bloke....of course the better educated see it slightly differently:

"An expensive pastime involving an insular, entitled group of elitist, white males with misogynistic attitudes"

Yeah...I reckon that captures the zeitgeist!

All that & more. Not to mention thinking that their race gives them greater rights than other vessels. Generally richly deserved IMO.

Funny thing, when I haul out, the yard puts me over in the corner where all the fishing boats & work boats go. We get along great. I think I have a personality defect though.

That's the one. I think it was between 5 and 8 years ago, the report was on the interwebs. I'm not sure if it was Australian Sailing (AYF) or some related group who did it. I'd sure like to see it again.  If anyone has a link.

Thanks mate.

Sailing isn't dying.

*SAIL RACING* might be in trouble, don't know, don't care.

But that's just a minor component of sailing.

I remember from many decades ago a report that said that sailing was the second highest rate of participation of all olympic sports - swimming being the highest.  They were talking participation as a recreational activity, not competition.

That's because nobody in their right mind actually wants to watch OTHER PEOPLE racing sailboats. Boring as batshit. Worse then doing it even. Worse than watching golf.

Must have been before walking came to Olympics.

Was it the Gemba Report you were looking for?

https://cdn.revolutionise.com.au/site/bjhfiaw1ulx5lybb.pdf

Paints a pretty sorry picture.

from

https://www.sailingresources.org.au/clubresources/research/

Research points to Sailing being second in exclusivity to riding a weed spreading  chaff burner for kicks.

Most sailing is for leisure/social NOT CLUB RACING.

Sailing is fighting it out with Lawn Bowls in the "want to give it a crack" stakes. FFS

With our sport in such a sorry state , can someone please remind me why we continue to contribute money to Australian Sailing.

And the competition for participation among olympic sports would be:
