Australian quarter tonners

Where are all the old quarter tonners in Aus?

Europe seem to have a collaborative qt scene - why can't we?

this could be a reasonably affordable and fun scene.
Southport has Quarter Flash still racing.

I'm told that she is a old Melbourne boat. They also have an other 1/4 tonner and a few JOG boats sails g as well.

That's not financially feasible and in my mind is stupid - 10,000 hours and kills old boat regents. You could stand under a cold shower for over 3 hours tearing up 50's for that amount! Why would you?

No I am talking about a minimalist cost regen of the class - 1 set of sails per year, minimal boat alterations from original design versus handicap etc.

Insurance and maintenance costs are the same for more rewarding (for want of a better term) boats, and at least in Hobart the JOG scene in dead, it was dying in the 90s when I was crewing on a Holland 25 1/4 tonner, but there were still a few overnight races we could enter with plenty of similar sized boats - these days no one seems to want to race much less than a 1/2 tonner or Young 88.

There are quite a few Bonbridge 27's in Sydney.  Weren't they designed as a non grand prix quarter tonner.

I am sure there are plenty of other quarter tonners in Sydney as well.

I guess all the latest Gen boats from back in the day went to Europe for regattas and never came home.

I sailed on Ocean Racer Chaser a little bit when she was on Pittwater and I believe she's up in Southern QLD somewhere too.

There was a Whiting 1/4 for sale on I think Lake Macquarie last summer.

I like the Euro 1/4 scene and what they are doing but unfortunately I don't think they fit into the current Oz scene, most people interested in that size go for sportie's.

Ocean Racer Chaser is in Southport and has been for about 10 years.

Awesome boat , Laurie Davison design built by Ken Jago for my father Keith Jones for the 1983 1/4 ton cup in Melbourne , finished second behind Dubois ‘Quatermaster’ - Graham Jones ( no relation). Keith and team raced in Europe 1/4 ton cup in Niuewport 1984 , and again in ‘85 and I think ‘86 ( but may have those years wrong ). Some of the guys who sailed aboard Peter Gale , Barney Walker , Stewart Carter , Ross Lloyd. She came home and was based in SEQ until family sold her. Sails with cut down rig now. - Rod Jones

The current owner, Doug Brown has owned her for over 25 years and they sail her very well. She is currently dry sailed out.

The owner,  about 10 years back shortened the rig by about 6 feet and the rig is now a 7/8's rig. Quarter Flash still sails very well with the shorter rig and still uses the same size headsails and a smaller main.  I'm told that before the mast was shortened she was rated as a maxi 1/4 toner and to rate as a 1/2 toner they only needed to lower the boom 100 mm or so and to increase the P measurement on the Mainsail.

Way too big, Lady Grave (aka Disgrace) with the factional rig rated just under 1/2 ton from memory

Yeah,  I remember racing offshore at night on a 24' Farr lift keeler.

MAD the lot of us!

People liked JOG because it seemed to rate a wider variety of boat styles more equally than IOR,  but then came the custom JOGies which blew the production boats out of the water.  As seems to be the way the fleet dwindled after that.

Was fun while it lasted though.

Lady Grace was Max Tunbridge's own boat [following on from Grace Darling] with a metalflake gelcoat like a ski boat. Max had every locker under the settees built with foam backing for use as eskies. When the boat was at the Brisbane Boat Show he had a bet with Ken Down as to how long a bag of ice would last in each - won easily.

Grace Darling had a standard masthead rig, Lady Grace pushed the rig a little higher making it a fractional.

The other thing that Max had was a small winch for every line as it was easier for his family to trim.

Davidson quart Quarterflash.jpg

Here she is in 1983 Rod, I raced that Quarter Ton Cup on Ocean Racer Chaser, a near sister design to QF from Laurie Davidson skippered by Rod Dredge. Knew your old man from early JOG days when he raced Tasqua here in Melbourne. We often held JOG meetings at his Pub in Doncaster. Top bloke!

Huge fun. I remember in the early 80s JOG Nationals here in Melbourne we saw over 60, yep that was SIXTY +, JOG boats racing.
