I can't recall either of those issues being so clear that it was enough to cast doubt on the actual result of the protest or to cause the storm of abuse towards the PC, but If you still have a copy of the protest documents I'd be interested in refreshing my memory; it may be wrong.

EDIT - I found the decision and can't see anything wrong with it. If it was so glaringly wrong why didn't the cat owner appeal?

As far as I can recall, much of the controversy was because people kept on bringing up the (incorrect) claim that there was something illogical about a starboard tack boat getting DSQd for altering course in a way that prevented the port tacker from keeping clear.

Did the PC chair say that multis have to give way to monos, as Rottnest claimed?

So what tether is compliant now?
Ot looks like Spinlock and Baltic aren't. And I would have thought they were as good as any.

Spinlock definitely comply. Not sure why anyone is saying they don't?
As I understand the regulations, any tether with the flat stainless hook does not comply for Cat 1-4 as of July 1. From what I can see from websites & Whitworths, both Spinlock & Baltic offer both types.
I have both brands on my boat but all with the flat plate hook thus I have to replace them all this year, or just stick with cat 7 races.
The irony of Cat 4 is that you have to carry tethers but not jackstays to hook them onto 😝

Wrong Chairman there Curious but I can understand the confusion. There are Chairman and Chair Men.Not the Chairman of the Protest Committee.More along the lines of this one.Once again I trust this will help you get up to speed.Never let the Facts Found get in the way of a good protest.

So where did the PC in the Queensland cat/beachball protest go wrong in your opinion?

An update on the tethers issue. I hear that a few of the Sydney clubs are getting together to approach AS, as they believe Cat 4 races will be killed off by this new requirement - again only country in the world to do this.

Additionally the new "moulded" tethers are yet to be tested in the same way as the stainless ones AS won't accept. When a manufacturer was asked what would happen with the "new" approved tethers - they would break, he said.

A final point - the following is from the Report into the death that has been the catalyst for this issue.
Safety Lesson

To prevent the strength of a safety harness tether becoming compromised in-service due to lateral loading on the tether hook, the method used to anchor the end of the tether to the vessel should be arranged to ensure that the tether hook cannot become entangled with deck fittings or other equipment.

Doesn't say anything about banning the old ones.

Blind freddy can see this..

Why AS insists on deviating from the WS regs is a mystery. They crave to be 'world leaders in safety', but lack the appropriate expertise.

I have had several discussions & exchange of correspondence with a certain person at AS and got nowhere, on the subject of tethers. I hope a few clubs banding together will put some pressure on AS to see a bit of common sense. It’s like complaining about your wife to your mother in law.
I am aware of several boats in Sydney that won’t be doing Cat 4 races next season, myself included, which is a real shame. Clubs are struggling with numbers as it is, sailing numbers are down, at least in Sydney, we don’t really need more nonsensical rules that are destined to further reduce numbers.
By the way the RYA only sent out a warning to all members about the hook issue, and they were the organising authority for the race in which the incidence occurred.

Question to GRS, I am sure he is lurking. Are the PFD hoods required for Cat 1 & 2 retrofittable? If not, I guess the poor owner, or the crew member, has to front up for all new PFD’s as well as new tethers ?

And the race involved was the Clipper race, and the incident occurred in the Southern Ocean on the way to Cape Horn iirc. Not exactly Sydney to Pittwater. Even Cats 1 - 3 is an over reaction.

I know my club is already looking at a cruise in company next year. Sad if not changed.

We used to have our boat at Cat 3 level then the keel and rudder annual inspections came in and in WA they did more Cat 4 races and now the tether issue, is it any wonder people aren’t doing races. AS are complete fuckwits.
