Autopilot replacement

Please excuse my ignorance in advance.

I am replacing my Simrad JX 300 computer and 2 AP 21 control heads as they are beginning to act irrationally on occasion. The computer drives a Simrad RPU 300 connected to a hynautic linear drive (K-3 B). I have a new Simrad NAC3 and plan to simply duplicate the connections (power to power; motor to motor; rudder reference to rudder and NMEA 2000 to NMEA 2000. I am confused regarding what on the J300 is called the clutch bypass. The two wires coming from the clutch bypass currently go to a relay which is wired to power from the computer feed and a second wire that disappears in a wire bundle which I am unable to trace.

I understand the purpose of the clutch bypass function which allows for manual steering when the AP is disengaged but there is no electrical connection to the drive ram, motor (other than the positive and negative leads from the computer)or Hydraulic system.

I have a basic misunderstanding of how the clutch bypass and related “drive engage” work in this system and would appreciate any help in understanding. Thanks

Mechanical or hydraulic steering?

One or multiple AP drives?

Can the boat be steered with AP turned off?
