Aviateur 5.7M vs ClassGlobe 5.80

Hello, I am a new member here although I have browse through topics here for years and never thought of participating personally until this corona pandemic.

Would like to connect with more knowledgeable people here, particularly on the topic of yacht racing.

Anyway, say I have a lot of free time during this lockdown summer season, and I thought of spending some time building a small cruiser racer and I have to pick one from two very similar designs:

1. Aviateur 5.7M

2. Globe 5.80

I wondered which one will be the better choice, and what are you guy's opinions about the design?

Either would be a good way of turning 30k of materials into something worth about 3k, with about 2000 hours hard labour.  if it were me, I would buy a 5k plastic shitter 4ksb for sailing (it will still sail circles round these 2), and build a rowing boat just to get it out of my system.

There is no 5k plastic shitter in my region, shipping it alone would cost more than 5k.

The closest thing to a shitter near where I am is asking for 15k, I guess it cost more in terms of money and time to fix it, and it will still be a slower, older boat.

Well good luck.  I think the Aviateur looks prettier, but the Globe 5.8 would be better for singlehanded ocean sailing? So its your boat, just build the boat you want to sail?

The Aviateur do look like a slightly faster and more practical boat due to the retracting keel.
But I am not sure on other aspect, I am open to opinions anyway.

Very cool, it is quite a bit heavier and larger boat than the above two, and I'll keep them in consideration as well.

Check their website to see the complete line of boats which they produce patterns and plans or in kit form as well. They have a cool 18’ boat that may be something you like.

the question was NOT if either of the 2 would be a quick, easy & cheap way to get to the water.
Unimaginable though it may be to you: there are people enjoying enormously to build something with their own hand, without econimics being their overriding motive.
We have a saying that roughly translates:
"Not everything with value must have a price."

The ClasseGlobe 5.80 appears to have a LOT more interior cabin volume, that's why it's got that bulky look. That would be one decision criteria for me, more head & elbowroom in the cabin and more reserve buoyancy. Looking at the hull shape, it also has a narrower bottom panel, less chine angle and I'd bet lower wetted surface. In moderate winds it may be the faster of the two, although the Aviateur looks like it could really blast downwind.

I don't particularly like either of them, and my observation of "big little" boats is that they cost 99% as much as the bigger boat would. Unless you have some long term size issue, I'd suggest building a bigger simpler design.

construction methods of Aviateur & ClassGlobe 5.80 are clearly quite different:
A, is 21st century: laminated chines, fillet&Glass/Epoxi-joints, CG5.( is pretty much "traditional" plywood construction.
(while I don't like the look of the A too much, I find the CG5.8 positively ugly.)
