B 36.7 vs C&C 110

I crewed aboard a 36.7 for several years and didn't especially care for the boat. Apart from a deck layout that drew blood on almost every race, I occasionally got to drive and two things stood out:

1. Either the main was way too big or that big fat stern was pushing too much water but countering weather helm in over 12 kts true was like dragging an anchor.

2. I found it hard to stay in a groove in light stuff. Just no feel for how much rudder is too much. It's not linear in that a small correction gets you nothing and then a little more forces you to overshoot.

Now I'm looking at boats again and, although mostly it will just be my wife and I out tooling around on weekends, my wife and I really, I mean REALLY, can't stand to have another boat in our size range sail past us. For all its faults, the Bene offers a nice cruising package with good performance for its size. The C&C 110 seems to offer similar accommodations and performance figures but I wonder how it sails in comparison. A side by side test sail isn't likely to happen. Anyone out there have experience with the two boats?

I also wonder if the B 40.7 is just a bigger version of the 36.7 or if it's nicer to sail. The PHRF rating is certainly something to take note of.

Appreciate all and any input. I did a search on all the likely forums and found nothing but, if I missed it, I do apologize.

As a notable sailmaker once put it, "The First 36.7 wouldn't go straight if you dropped it from an airplane". Just the nature of the boat and it takes a really in tune main trimmer to minimize the effects.

Only sailed a 110 once or twice, I found them painful in their own special way.

the steering sucks....No. 6 let me drive for a total of??? eerrrrr, maybe 15 seconds before he told me to get back on the rail ;-)

the rack and pinion steering (IMHO) fucking sucks moose balls................but a great main trimmer does help

We're trying to win a fucking yacht race here Dacapo.
That and they fact we were trying to stay off a lee shore. Was really just thinking of you guys and not turning a nice little sail into a hate mission having to tack repeatedly that last 12-15 miles.

I am all about showing my crewmates some love when it comes right down to it.

Raced for two seasons on a C&C 110. Seemed like a fast boat but was very hard to sail to its rating of 81 or so in phrf ne. I never liked the pole in / pole out arrangement, and I never drove, but the overall ergonomics of the boat left a lot to be desired. Rig tune was also a problem - I always thought the owner had it too tight, but we never really found its groove before he retired from racing and started using it for strictly cruising.

I went head to head (in cruising mode) a with 110 for a few years and never had a problem with it. My 36.7 is for sale in Charleston with a new engine, new head and main sails and new asym. The other sails are a few years old. The boat is in great shape.

Yes I agree about the main and main trimmer although mine tracked well in light air and had better success racing in it, heavy air not so much but no 36.7s did.

Yeah yeah, send me a bill for the ad but I answered his question.

Thanks for the input. I guess the 36.7 and the 110 are out. The 99 is a wonderful boat for its size, I'm sure, but a little small for us. If there were a J37 or any J boat bigger than the 109 for sale on the W. Coast under say $110K the search would be over. I don't know why but it seems like there's a $20K premium out here comparative to the E Coast and Midwest.Plus I think people flog their boats 12mos out of the year here until they tire of them, then leave them sitting neglected at the dock for two years, then try to sell them.

(Geez, I just hijacked my own thread. )

Just from racing against them I have the strong impression that the 36.7 is much easier to sail to its rating than the 110, for whatever reason. I have not sailed on either.

With 13 years in my 36.7, never recall losing a race to a C&C 110, but then I've got a mainsheet trimmer who's a helluva lot more talented than the driver. Now the 115s can be a different story....

40.7 is a better balanced boat than the 36.7. Much better upwind. 110 vs 36.7.. I think the 110 wins especially if it has the sprit, but it's kind of portly and the interior doesn't do much for me. At the pricier end you get the J109, 120, and the C&C 115, all of which are great multi purpose boats. IF you can sell the wife on an Express 37 that boat will crush most of the boats on this list and is great to sail and cruise on.

visit the Beneteau Class Association website here....... http://www.beneteaufirst367.org/home check out the closest fleet to where you live.....

contact owners and ask them what they think of the boat..... There is also a facebook group that offer lots of advice and guidance.....

I own one and IMHO the best bang for the buck.....expect tradeoffs with what ever you buy......wife and I cruise a lot in the Great Lakes...also race in many regattas with success.....add Asyms/Code 0 and your in great shape for distance races. (PHRF)

With the price point now, the 36.7 seems to be getting noticed again......

I would post the C&C 110 class association site and facebook page also, however, THERE IS NOT ONE......

soooooo, with 4 somewhat minimal answers to your question, you are discounting both boats already?

Wow.....your broker must be going mad......lol

Definitely should be looking at Express 37. Particularly the ones with the aft cabin doors. Liked the MKII but always sailed the originals.

You might also consider the J33. Quick with a killer rating in WLIS.

If you are looking for a boat with a good head, 367 is pretty small so your wife might find that an issue.

Also if you like to go fast downwind, the 367 probably isn't the boat for you.
