The American military had “an awareness gap” that allowed three other suspected Chinese spy balloons to transit the continental United States undetected under the Trump administration, the Pentagon general responsible for providing air and missile defense over North America said on Monday.

Heard a radio segment on NPR in the past hour, the NYT something-or-other segment, where near the beginning it was mentioned that had the freaking balloon been blown into Alaska only a day or so sooner, the wind would have carried it straight east toward Greenland instead. But it was treated like just a throwaway line or factoid, they went on and got deep into the balloon's supposedly evil intentions instead :D

Good at predicting the wind currents at 60k ft for god-knows how long, all the way to Alaska, so as to then catch in perfect timing a northerly that'd take it south across Canada? Yeah, very good!

Wait... didn't some famous former President create a whole branch of the military to deal with threats such as this?
Where was the Space Force, and why didn't they spring into action?

Does an altitude of 60,000 feet qualify as space?

Ah ha!
”For NASA and the U.S. military, for example, space starts at an altitude of 50 miles (around 80 kilometers), according to NOAA. However to the international community, including the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (opens in new tab) (FAI), space starts a little higher, at 62 miles (100 km), at the Kármán line.”

Maybe we need a sub space force to cover the area between the the air ends and space begins.

Not sure how accurate this is. He completely skips the steering reports (if true) and doesn’t seem to think it’s in water accessible to scuba.
