Why do you suppose Blinkin's China trip was postponed only after the public learned of the balloon.
Tensions are already high in Beijing, there isn't much need to have a meeting where any gain in relations likely won't happen until tensions die down.

The Chinese didn't call it off, we did, but only after the public learned the truth about the balloon.

Some of us have a life outside of the PA forum on SA. While others have 52,500 posts. If you averaged 20 seconds per post (generous) that's about 7 weeks working 9-5 ( with no breaks at all) of your life you have wasted making a lying fool of yourself. Feel better?
Poking you takes no time or thought at all and your posts times IDs makes you look even more pathetic, which is not easy to accomplish.

If it had really been a "spy balloon" the Chinese would have blown it up over Kansas.
Or else over empty-space Canada. Am guessing they had the ability to at least release the box if they wanted to, but that the balloon signal got jammed some time soon after it drifted over Alaska and so they had no idea where it was, let alone how to communicate with it.

Pics are out now from the US Navy showing the parachute being pulled onto a boat. Presumably the payload was still attached by the lines, likely since cut, and so they have all of that located too and ready for retrieval.

A key question is about if that thing had some big propulsion system that would have enabled them to steer it on the course it took. Color me skeptical, am guessing so far it really was errant and simply drifting the random wind currents up there as China said from the outset, but guess we'll see.

Where did you see information about it having a 'big propulsion system'?
Have seen nothing at all as evidence yet, just a lot of conjecture that the path it took was intentional.

It did obviously have big solar power arrays but an intentional and powerful propulsion system? I doubt they will find anything like that was on board, but guess we will see. Maybe a small one, to help land it accurately.

Tuned in to a House Committee Hearing for a few minutes, the main guest was an Admiral who was somewhat aware of US air balloons, they are for weather research and says they often drift for years. Says nobody really has paid much attention to altitudes above 40k ft and below Low Earth Orbit since nothing strategic flies around in that zone. Propellers are useless because the air is too thin and visible visibility of terrain would be hard because of all the atmospheric interference most of the time; they track mostly just atmospheric cloud, wind and air temp.

Balloons "steer" by changing altitude, which changes the wind direction they are experiencing. I don't know what amount of wind direction changes can be found at that altitude, tho
