I still think it would have been easier to recover over the prairies.
When the location is described as 18 NM E of Combine World you are seriously MFN.
That's handy, they even marked the balloon landing spot.

(The Borowitz Report)—Demonstrating his commitment to keeping America secure, former Vice-President Dick Cheney has offered to shoot down all future balloons that venture into U.S. airspace.

“I haven’t touched my hunting rifle in a few years, but handling a gun is like riding a bicycle,” he said. “You just pick it up, and, blammo!”

Cheney said that he was prepared to watch the skies for foreign balloons and, the moment he spots one, “I’ll use my patented hunting technique: aim, squint, fire.”

The former Vice-President said that he was honored to take part in a geopolitical struggle he called the War on Inflatables.

You are completely misunderstanding me, am just for now giving China the benefit of the doubt until we know more. And yes, mocking the threat implied in the balloon fiasco, by mostly just RWNJ hotheads.

Am also not 'associating' myself with Xi or anything he may be after. But we do need to try compete on good terms for the betterment of everybody. Why can't we all thrive?
My objection is to this -
They have recovered the little lost Chinese pilot. Sources are identifying him as 'Sum Ting Wong.'

That is a cheap and insulting shot, playing on an offensive stereotype.

Better then the navy guy, Some interesting arguments. Question: Did the pentagon disclose this before or after people looked at the sky and saw a big moon like thing?

Even Simon Cowell on AGT is bending a knee to China.
I haven't seen anyone in America say 'Taipei, China'

How to steer and move a powered balloon:
Like any other floating object, if you have a prop and rudders you can turn it and move it forward. Airships can go along fairly well, a big fat round balloon is going to be pretty hard to move very far or very fast.

Can cruise at 80 MPH ;)

I would think the Chinese balloon would have been hard pressed to do 5 knots.
But can it go dead downwind faster than the wind? That is the salient question.

The balloon first came to the public's attention on February 1, 2023, when former Billings Gazette editor Chase Doak[44] spotted the object above Billings, Montana, after seeing reports that the airspace around Billings was closed. He had initially assumed it was a star or a UFO.[45] Doak contacted his friend and Billings Gazette photographer Larry Mayer,[46] and the two photographed the balloon using telephoto lenses. Mayer also sent the images to various government agencies.[46] After the photographs were published in the Billings Gazette and received widespread media coverage, the U.S. Department of Defense and the Canadian Department of National Defence announced on February 2 that NORAD was aware of a high-altitude surveillance balloon believed to belong to China and had been tracking it for "several" days.[47][48]The balloon was flying at an altitude of 60,000 feet (18,000 m) over Billings at the time.[39]

Per wiki, my understanding is fundamentally correct. The military admitted US airspace had been violated only after a former newspaper editor broke the story.

Was mocking the hysteria, that's all.

Many are trying to make this something about a human attacking them (call it 'China'), and in racial terms. Like as if some stereotype was aiming a gun at them, from some secret position with a suspiciously unknown motivation.

It is the NJ's playing on those stereotypes. If you are afraid of me mocking the NJ's, well I am perfectly happy to add you to my short list-of-fools ignore list to relieve you of your angst, unless you (please) just do the same first ;)

I am disappointed you don't seem to get it. Or, don't want to.

Do whatever you want. I figured you for better than that race-baiting shit.

You mean like the U2's flying over the USSR and Cuba? Or the SR71 flying over the USSR, Poland, East Germany etc. Or maybe the Global Hawk that flies over Europe and Russia. Or is it just the USA's airspace that is out of bounds?
also illegal. also shot down. what is your point?
