There's a story of fighter planes a couple decades ago that wasted 1000 rounds trying to shoot down an errant weather balloon. This thing's about 60,000 feet. The pentagon won't say if the F-22 can go over 50,000 feet. There's still a F-104 flying, maybe we could get him to shoot it down. Otherwise it likely means wasting an expensive missile that will fly right through the gasbag.
Interesting, reports are this has rudders. How would that work, if SOG matches wind speed?
The balloon is not going to run out of fuel, since it has solar panels. The official also said that the balloon steers by rudder and is corkscrewing around to slow its progress over land, but the jet stream continues to move it on a trajectory across the U.S. The Pentagon is still considering ways to "dispose" of it but has "grave concerns" about the damage it would cause if it fell to Earth.
