Just saw on FB about the sale. For many years BP has been a main stay in sailing lets keep in mind that they are spending big bucks for good PR and over the past couple of months it has all gone away. As others have mentioned BP is run more like a Tour de France cycling team than most other sailing teams looking for good PR. While I love sailing I also have followed the Tour for many years and seen how the manager of teams in the Tour is in total control. I have to point out that both Crédit Agricole and Crédit Lyonnais have both gotten their monies worth in the Tour with very capable teams. I am not sure why BP got into sailing instead of cycling for good PR but I would not be shocked if they get out after this incident. Not trying to dis Clarisse and truth be told Florence Arthaud was a true icon in sailing but one only has to look at what happened to the Tour de Femme's strugles to get any media attention to understand why big European companies field teams for the Tour de France but not the Tour de Femme.
Bottom line is BP has done lots of good stuff for sailing over the years in many places other than the big ocean races that get all the publicity and it would be tragic if that goes away.

Thing is it probably costs a lot less to field a team in the Tour de France than to buy, maintain, and race a sailboat in big ocean races. Not to mention the Tour de France is on TV every day for basically a month and the pix of the state winner is on the front page of newspapers the next day wearing the sponsor's jersey. While most peeps at SA are sailing fanboys they are a minority of peps who watch TV or read newspapers.
Bottom line is supporting a team in the Tour de France is probably way better bang for the buck than spending way more money buying a boat capable of even finishing an ocean race and paying a crew to sail it and paying a yard to maintain it. BP was obviously supporting sailing for reasons other than the best ROI for good PR and now they are being bashed. Not sure how much longer they can or will stay in the game.
I think you both underestimate how much a Tour campaign costs and how big sailing is in French media for the general public.
BP might be a "bad" example due to the size of the commitment, but sailing is certainly among the best bang for buck if your target is the french public.

Oh now that is funny.
It costs a tremendous amount to have all the necessary doctors, trainers etc to administer the steroids and do the blood doping. Very expensive to do this right and not get caught. Don’t even get me started about the expense of the banned substances… with supply chain issues being what they are these days.

Average budget of a TdF team : 18M€ per year. Some teams are way above that.
Estimated budget of the best-funded IMOCA campaign 2016-2020 (Charal, by far) : 15 to 20 M€ over the whole 4 years cycle.
So no, there is still a large margin before saying TdF costs less !
But regarding bang for the buck, the jury is out. I guess is depends on what you're trying to achieve as a sponsor. For example, the TdF's international media coverage is undoubtedly orders of magnitude higher than that of any sailing competition, Vendee Globe included.
But it doesn't convey the same image...
I'm assuming this figure is the annual cost of a World Tour Team. If so then the annual exposure is WAY more than just the TdF - TdF is by far the biggest event of the year but there are 37 other World Tour level events each year that are now all televised/streamed across the world AND each bring their own crowds along the route.
IMO you get a LOT more exposure and fan interaction from a cycling team than a Vendee team.

Which is the reason why Vendee sponsors are mostly :
1- French
2- Aiming at the french public
3- And/or doing internal communication
4- Interested in conveying values of merit and resilience and adventure
TdF is hugely popular, but, in France at least, when it comes to values, it still mostly conveys systemic doping and petty team tactics (and beautiful landscapes)...
Then again, the "public" doesn't really care about values...
