Banque Populaire dropping ClaCla

Average budget of a TdF team : 18M€ per year. Some teams are way above that.

Estimated budget of the best-funded IMOCA campaign 2016-2020 (Charal, by far) : 15 to 20 M€ over the whole 4 years cycle.

So no, there is still a large margin before saying TdF costs less !

But regarding bang for the buck, the jury is out. I guess is depends on what you're trying to achieve as a sponsor. For example, the TdF's international media coverage is undoubtedly orders of magnitude higher than that of any sailing competition, Vendee Globe included.

But it doesn't convey the same image...
one needs to compare apples. The top teams (Ineos/JV/UAE) are all about 50M€ per annum., so over 4 year cycle about 10 times your quote for Charal.

Totally different market, guess another upside for VG is you sell a boat once you're done too. Cycling the team has very few actual assets.

(Only World Tour teams take part in the TdF, right ?)
There are some Continental level teams that get invited - they're always the ones that send riders off in breakaways in the first days to get their sponsors on the camera before fading into the background....

Agree about the French focussed Vendee sponsorship.

I'm sure ATR will be making their own money out of this move but if they do end up swooping in and lining Clarisse up with a whole new programme it'll be their best PR move since Alex wandered around on his keel... definitely beats crashing into a Caribbean island

I think we're saying the same thing ;-)

No doubt, but unlike the Blonde Bimbo, she doesn't need to, because she is Très Cool. :)

But if given the chance, why wouldn’t you? Alex Thompson had a long, “mostly” successful run with huge budgets because he did all those great PR stunts for HB.

Ignore the boat breaking habits for now. Alex could basically put on a clinic for how to keep a long term, high dollar sponsorship. This is nothing but good for her.

"World Sailing Trust has today published an initial set of recommendations and considerations to support better maternity policies in sailing. Project Juno brings together six initial recommendations to look to set the sport of sailing on a more inclusive course when it comes to women who wish to become mothers and remain in their chosen fields."

15 page report released today. Good stuff:

Great intro by Dee Caffari, the Cremer affair is one of the examples analyzed.

Clarisse Crémer has found a sponsor for the Vendée Globe 2024

24 March 2023 at 20h17

According to our information, Clarisse Crémer, landed by Banque Populaire at the beginning of February, has already found a new sponsor to lead the Imoca bought by Alex Thomson.

Dropped by her sponsor Banque Populaire in February, supported by the Minister of Youth and Sports in the aftermath, Clarisse Crémer, 33, has not been idle lately: she would be on the way to succeed in putting together a solid project in just a few weeks.

Helped by her relatives, her brother in particular, the sailor first tried to buy the boat that was initially intended for her, Charlie Dalin's ex-Apivia that Team Banque Populaire had recovered after the last Route du Rhum. An excellent foiler very coveted.

In the end, Alex Thomson, the first to put the 4.8 million euro check on the table, won the bid and bought the boat from Banque Populaire, the latter having finally decided to give up the 2024 Vendée Globe.

The Welshman, who has taken part in five Vendée Globe races, is working with a Canadian skipper for the 2028 Vendée Globe, but Thomson has decided not to take part in the 10th edition in 2024: it is therefore very likely that he will rent this 2019 Verdier design to Clarisse Crémer. So the question of the boat has been settled.

It remains to find the budget and therefore the partner. According to our information, this partner could be L'Occitane en Provence (*), sponsor already present in Imoca during the last Vendée Globe with Armel Tripon. Just after the finish, the round-nosed Manuard plan built at the Black Pepper Yachts shipyard in Nantes had been sold to Louis Burton (Bureau Vallée).

In a twist of fate, Armel Tripon finished 11th in the last Vendée Globe just ahead of... Clarisse Crémer. If L'Occitane embarks on this new project, the sailor based in Locmiquélic (56) will still have to go through the miles qualification system to be on the starting line of the 2024 Vendée Globe. These famous miles that she misses so much. Unless the Vendée organizers decide to give her the only invitation for this 10th edition. Alain Leboeuf, president of the Vendée Globe 2024, was very clear on this subject at the beginning of the week: "I repeat that the Vendée Globe has planned everything so that Clarisse can take the start in November 2024.

(*) The L'Occitane Group is a retailer of cosmetic wellness products based on natural and organic ingredients, led by Austrian Reinold Geiger. It is present in 90 countries (9,000 employees) and announces operating profits of 310 million euros in 2022.

CRANK IT UP CLARISSE!!!

Horses for courses. His ability to keep HB happy was a bit more complex than a bunch of stunts and his pictures emblazoned on the storefront of Hugo Boss in East Hampton.

No shit. I don’t get your point. He maintained one of the longer running sponsors, without winning. The guy knows marketing.

Yes. On one of the latest podcasts from Shirley Robinson, she talks to AT, and he talked about that relationship. He was always keen to deliver for HB, and he very much did. Prior to the keel walk HB had done some similar videos with other sports stars that they sponsored, most notably some top golfers. I forget thennumbers, but they (HB) were impressed with the golfing views of their stunts. When AT did the keel walk, he blew them away by orders of magnitude. Then there was the kite surfing and the mast walk etc. All were massive marketing successes. On top of that AT had to do outreach with the boat all over, which other teams didn’t. So he went to china for example and other places. This all served to raise awareness of the VG and IMOCA class, something he did far more than any other skipper.

Apart from maybe the last one or two Vendee cycles that ATR competed in, the team used to run a 2 boat programme with one of their older 60s running an almost continuous PR/corporate gig around the globe - they had a crew of 4/5 that would sail it between locations and then Alex and a few others of the management team would fly in for a couple of days of interviews, corporate sailing etc.
I think they stopped this once the foilers arrived as I guess it became more economic to sell the 'outgoing' boat than keep it in the stable as the PR pony. The old boats never had much of a budget - it was always an exercise in 'make and mend'.

great insight about Alex Thompson’s partnership with Hugo Boss on Shirley robertsons podcast - his team was relentless in driving value for them - really impressive

This is what I’m hoping Clarisse takes advantage of. She’s obviously already great at marketing, but Alex & company could help make sure she never has to put up with the bullshit she did again.

Maybe Hugo Boss should launch a line of baby clothes for yuppie parents. They’ve got the perfect marketing opportunity! 😂
