Truly a sad day.  Auckland deserved the cup and ABNY is a deadman walking.  This is the end of a nice era for New Zealand sailing. NZ will never sail in another AC after this next one, and many will claim they are not sailing in this one either.  Dalton, with his ego has insulted the people of New Zealand in the search of money and to "punish" Auckland for making him explain where he spent tax payer money.  Dalton chose the details and the costs and then used it as an excuse to move the cup off shore.  

You are making the wrong argument here. Read what the Press Release said: Emirates Team New Zealand & their defending Yacht Club, the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron felt the Resposibility to grow the Sport of Sailing and this particular Competition on a Global Stage.

In case you missed it: Two out of the last three Cups had only 3 challenging Teams (2013 & 2021). This thing can't survive with so few Competitors.

I am going on a limp and say if they had chosen Auckland no way would we be hearing News of a potential French Challenge.

Barcelona as Venue has truly opened up AC37 for more Participants.

Cork is done. Malaga is off the table. Jeddah is a nightmare of a place with Houthi rockets in the sky (what the…?) so it’s sounding like Barcelona has a free run to stump up the cash or we’re all back to Auckland. I like those two choices – either will do just fine but I get the impression that the story ain’t over just yet. The cold, hard cash end of the Cup cycle is where it all happens. If what we're hearing is correct, GD will have to package the venue announcement very carefully as there will be some understandable backlash from the NZ public. Perhaps an AC40 series event in Auckland? 

Contrary to some of the views on these forums, NZ will come around eventually, and I'd imagine strong support by the time the cup kicks off in 2024.

I think you are wrong about the support. As a challenger, the event was sold as 'bringing the cup home'. Non sailors got behind the idea and supported them all the way.

Once won, it was sold as 'keeping the cup in NZ'. Non sailors supported this as well.

How do you sell this one without looking like greedy wankers? You can't claim you want to bring it home, it was already here. You can't claim you are keeping it in NZ. They could try and spin the fact the actual cup is staying, but in reality it is the event itself that people take notice of.

So I think it will be a total fizzer in NZ and will be the death knell of an NZ team for the future.

Considering this was theirs, and your Angle, and you were completely wrong about everything, id say i feel completely vindicated. If your only sticking point is me saying Jeddah was not a real bid, prove me wrong. Ive proved, well, Dalts and pretty much everyone else proved you wrong, so go ahead, show me any hard evidence, not hear say that Jeddah was real. Cork, Malaga, Auckland and Barcelona all confirmed their bids and released figures. Not once did Dalts or anyone in Jeddah confirm any bid. Jeddah was fake. It was leverage so that the preferred venues would stump up with the cash. And it worked.

I expect there will be quite a bit of backlash over the next few weeks and then most of the public will forget about it leaving just us sad bastards to argue over every snippet of AC news.

This happens every cycle but when the actual event rears it's head in 2024 there will be plenty of kiwi support.
