Some Matteo quotes are here America's Cup, de Nora: Barcelona is the ideal choice and we are not mercenaries - Ruetir

On Jeddah: “We have to make a distinction between how Saudi Arabia is perceived and how it actually is. I’ve been there several times, it’s an incredible country, populated above all by young people, which had a very important project linked to sport and the America’s Cup in particular. It was the only place, for example, that would have financed 100% the women’s America’s Cup ”.

On SailGP: “SailGp is a beautiful circuit, which also uses boats expressed by the America’s Cup and which we also look at as a very valid opportunity to train the teams competing for the Cup. But it is something different from the latter. We are not interested in organizing an annual circuit, like Formula One, with boats that tend not to change in order to guarantee continuity to the event and rightly reduce costs. No, the America’s Cup has to be something else in our vision. It is something that does not exist otherwise, unrepeatable, unique. The top of technology, of innovation. This is what Team New Zealand is looking at, and from this derive many other things, such as the sailing speed record attempt to be held soon or the hydrogen-powered support boats, of which the first model has just been launched.“

And the teams? There are the defender and for now four challengers, but there is constant talk of the entry of other teams. One French, maybe a Spaniard, maybe another Italian. In short, the desire for an America’s Cup like Valencia 2007 seems to be back, thanks also to the choice of the venue in Europe.

“Valencia was a wonderful edition of the Cup. But how many teams could really win? Three, maximum four. Here, for us this is no longer the line that the America’s Cup must follow: we are not interested in having so many teams, as much as having teams that can win. And those who are already registered on the card are. I am not ruling out that there may also be other teams, there are those who are working on it in some of the countries named. If there will be, we will be delighted ”.

I know average wind speed is a bit of a misnomer as it won't really tell you the full story in a place that has a still night and strong sea breeze in the afternoons. but this is not promising from some place called https://weatherspark.com/y/47213/Average-Weather-in-Barcelona-Spain-Year-Round

wind direction, if it's from the south that's likely to come with more chop/windswell?

View attachment 501427

and now totally spitballing, but this looks pretty humid in the summer. when you're going 40knots+ SOG how much does the humidity/density of air affect things? i guess LRPP would have the best experience with this.

Usual day between May and October is a sea breeze between 12 and 18 konts, starting at 12-13 depending on how much is the sun heating, peacking around 15 and then dying at 18-19.
wind should not be a problem at all

TE is saying there could be a second Italian challenge, and that they've purchased Te Kahu....

Would be good if true.

SECOND ITALIAN CHALLENGER? Or an early April Fool’s joke??

This just in from an Italian FOSI, via Google translation….

“We made oars”

Circolo della Vela Bari is proud to announce that it has launched an America’s Cup Challenge at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Club.

The competition will run in Barcelona in the fall of 2024.

Founded on May 10, 1929, the Circolo della Vela Bari received from the Italian Sailing Federation the prestigious award for best Italian sailing club of the year 2017. Golden star of sporting merit since 2003, the Club has brought entire generations closer to sports practice.

The Circolo della Vela is chaired by Giambattista Titta De Tommasi.

The team that will represent the white/red guide will be led by two members famous for their sailing experiences: Roberto Ferrarese and Paolo Semerato.

The study and construction of the new AC 75 Class boat will be handled by the Polytechnic of Bari - Aerospace Systems Engineering section. Polytechnic’s motto is “de’ oars we made wings”. A simulator is already in operation at the Polytechnic, the first Italian stage of a new project promoted by Boeing.

The team is scheduled to acquire the two AC40 monotypes, already booked, which will be used for youth and women's regattas as a tool to open the America's Cup competition to women and the next generation of young sailing sailors. The team has already acquired from ETNZ, the test boat known as Thea Kahu, which will be used in

Periods allowed to new teams.

The new AC75 boat will be named Adriatica.

The City of Bari and the Club have submitted their candidacy to host one of the events that will precede the Barcelona Final.

The main "name sponsors" will be MSC Cruises and Adriatica Swiss Watches.

Teams, sponsors and program will be presented at a press conference to be held in Bari on Saturday 23 April at the headquarters of the Club.

Includes a lot of detail, could be something to it.

As an aside question, if someone simply buys one or more AC40’s do they have to pay the regular AC37 entry fees, make a real Challenge, acquire hydrogen chase boats etc, to be allowed to race in the AC40 races?

Yes North Atlantic swell gets so large that it’s able to cross the entirety of Portugal and Spains entire land mass before flowing into the med…
Crikey what happened to simply just posting an informed reply for the benefit of others rather than some sarcastic dribble.

Very good point
Explain please. North Atlantic swell?
I'v never sailed that end of the Med but when travelling through Barcelona and Valencia I observed a significant visible fetch on those open coasts. No islands or headlands to reduce the slop. Purely anecdotal evidence but the AC75's have only ever raced in the comparatively protected waters of the Waitemata

I'm sure there are sailors in this forum that could add a more professional or technical  response

Evidently you can get large waves.

The sea sparkles and laps against the shore of the Maresme coast, north of Barcelona, as the train runs alongside it, passing the few hopeful spring sunbathers and surfers. At points, Spain’s oldest train line runs so close to the shore it feels as if you’re travelling on the sea itself.

Last Sunday, that could well have happened. Heavy waves took a giant bite out of the coast, threatening a section of the track with collapse and forcing the train company to lay on a bus service between La Pineda and Malgrat de Mar.

It wasn’t the first time, and it won’t be the last: coastal erosion and rising sea levels have put the future of the famed Maresme line in jeopardy. In January 2020, storm Gloria battered the line with 3.6-metre (12ft) waves, causing widespread damage and putting several sections out of action. Adif, the company responsible for railway infrastructure, spent €12m (£10m) repairing and shoring up a 1.4-mile (2.2km) stretch of track and replacing a bridge. Smaller beaches were washed away entirely, removing even the thin buffer between trains and waves.

He's on the money here - everyone entered has a chance of taking this as we stand today.
