I'd rather the cup had stayed in New Zealand but this is a good location - a top location actually.
I think it was a practical decision to host the cup here ( in light of the alternative) failing to defend due to lack of funding / resourcing, I applaud it.
To the alchemist and others who have suggested in recent times that dalts is letting the home fans & local marine economy down with the overseas shift, I can only say this

Winning again in this new class of boat can only be good for the local industry.
And as a fan I'd like to see them win again, as do many others I suspect.
It'll prove a high standard of competition
Which will make for excellent viewing.
Which will add value to the AC & its support industries.

... and just quietly ... a win in europe will be ok for many of us.

I pretty much agree with this.

Also, Auckland was dubbed Stadium Course Sailing during AC36. The Problem was to race on Course C between Baston Point and North Head you needed a Southwesterly Wind Direction and the prevailing wind in the Auckland Summer Months was a Northeastern Seabreeze and with Rangitoto blocking that Iain Murray had no option then to race on Course A or E.

Here in Barcelona they can shift the axis of the Course no matter the wind direction. I can't wait to get to BCN in 2024.

FareVela’s Michele Tognozzi from Barcelona. Pictures of LR’s. base
It appears that from Colon’s column to LR takes 40-50 minutes on foot

Yes, could have been said better, I meant to say, while not equivalent to hosting the event, industry will still benefit to the extent of paragraph two, that is to say the media attention on New Zealand and in all likelihood the marine industry And its association with etnz.
Why will there be any media attention on NZ?

The game will play out in Barcelona. The teams will all be in Barcelona. The action and interviews will be in Barcelona. The only indication there is any New Zealand input will be NZ in one teams name (something I would prefer they remove).

So I don't see why there will be any media focus on NZ at all.

When the Cup was in San Francisco, the NZ govt of the time used the opportunity to host world land business leaders from around the world and later came back saying the money they spent doing that was the best return on investment they had ever had. something in the range of $30m worth of events and hosting generated billions in future economic activity, deals, and trade.

Trying that again could easily backfire when Emirates are the partner. Possibly the Russo-Ukraine war will have ended and it will all be forgotten by then, but I suspect sanctions will be ongoing at least. Being in bed with a country that hasn't criticized Russia, or sanctioned her won't be a good look.

Even ignoring the fact that then there was an expectation that if ETNZ won the event would be in NZ

There is a slight difference.

In San Francisco there was an ostensibly NZ team challenging the big boys. All with a plan to win and 'being the cup home'. So the meetings were selling the power of NZ.

Now we have a team that has taken that same cup and auctioned it off. All because NZ doesn't care to splash the cash enough. Because the NZ government is so short sighted they refuse to back a 'national' team. So the government uses an event that has painted them as a bunch of incompetent losers to sell how amazing they are?

Probably safer to stay away and cut the event off completely.

Guaranteed that whatever govt is in power in 2024 will be up there pressing the flesh and riding the coattails of the team's success once again.

Mate this probably depends a lot who is in charge in NZ after 2024. I can't see Ardern trying to get the AC back to NZ but if someone else is charge why not?

Richard Meacham said 85 % of the ETNZ Training will be in Auckland.

Win or lose, it is never coming back to NZ. The viaduct will be committed to other things, the cup in NZ is just a memory.

DG, the chance of Labour surviving the shitpile they have made of NZ is slim. Most kiwis will agree there are no good political choices on offer, but choosing 3 more years of this is not an option for most.

it will be back. Never is such a long time after all.
I just don't see it. The viaduct will move on, as it has to, so there won't be the space available to host it.

If the team wins, the money NZ will offer will never compete in an auction. Unless it turns out Barcelona loses a lot of money compared to what has been promised and no one bids for the next one. 🤔

If/when the team loses there will be no stomach among the Kiwi public to start again. Especially after the present one has shit all over them.

But, as you say, never is a long time.
