Although GD talks mostly about feelings, it seems like there must have been hard numbers that supported the choice. Barcelona likely hits more of the buttons a little better than the other options. Seems like a great choice. Not the only good one.

Saw just the top of a G-Tran article in Spanish too, they said THutch was disappointed in how late in October the Defender's dates are; maybe because the conditions might be so different from during the CSS?
which is probably why a defender would want to do it that way - mode your boat for slightly different conditions to the challenger series

Team New Zealand will put the Auld Mug on the line in late October in a best-of-13 series, against an opponent who will be determined when the Challenger Series concludes on October 2. A 16-day window was announced for the Cup match, with six designated race days and 10 reserve days.
In an interview with Newstalk ZB, Hutchinson, the skipper of challenging syndicate American Magic, voiced some worries over the timing of the event, saying: “we were there this year over the same timeframe for a TP 52 regatta and the worry quite frankly is over the 10-day period that we were there, we would’ve foiled in an AC75 two of those 10 days.”
There were also concerns over the daylight hours at that time of the year, as October is mid-autumn in the Northern Hemisphere. But Team New Zealand boss Grant Dalton played down Hutchinson’s comments and said a lot of work had gone into determining the dates for the Cup match and he had no worries about the potential conditions. “I haven’t been privy to the weather study Terry must have done, but as organisers obviously we have done extensive studies into the weather at that time of year and have no concerns as the conditions are expected to be very similar to what they were for the America’s Cup Match in Auckland in 2021,” Dalton said.
The timing of the regatta had come under careful consideration, Dalton said, particularly given it is being held in an Olympic year once again. However, unlike in 2021 when the America’s Cup was held in Auckland, the proximity of the Games in Paris to the Cup regatta played a role in when the Cup would be held.

I’m not sure less daylight is really an issue since the TV god fixes timing anyway. However back when Barcelona was mooted, I looked at some public weather records and it was clear that, at least for the year for which I had data, sea breeze was reliable in early October but crapping out by the end of the month. The selected dates aren’t ideal.

On the other hand, the dates make good economic sense for Barcelona. Get in those extra tourists outside the European holiday season, not peak season when it is packed out anyway.
It's clear the dates were chosen for money not for best sailing-conditions reasons. And THutch is right, as many of us pointed out while observing conditions and developments during the TP52 Finals recently.
There is also the possibility it serves in a self-dealing way to the Defender, them being allowed to target different likely conditions from what the Challs will have to design for to win the CSS.
Oh well... What did we expect, given the Barcelona choice in the first place?
Dalton is such a piece of shit. It is going to be poetic justice when all his sponsors drag thousands of VIPs there, they all go out to watch the races...and nothing happens. And then there is live tv in no wind days. But Dalton doesn't care, he's got his money for this one.

100% correct, targeting different conditions is pure AC Defender game play. But if yacht declarations hold true for AC37 as they did for AC36, a team can have a set of foils that suit late October and one for early September.
I realize the arms are longer this time, did the rudders get longer too? Hope so, that seaway could be a little crazy come late October.

I sailed for an hour or so from Doubtful sound to Dusky sound (south west south island of nz) in a huge swell with a big reflection off the cast. For 20 minute long sessions the skipper kept us on the top never going into a trough. I went up to the wheel house and watched and talked with him. He explained it was easy (having done it many times before and not wanting seasick passengers he was motivated to learn the technique.
Now he was steering the ship in the direction of the centre line. Whether that is possible when you are steering to keep the foil and the rudder on the crest is another thing but if they do then?

You can't stay on the crest upwind, and it would in general be either impossible or slow downwind because unless the waves are moving at your max VMG you'd either be unable to keep up or have to slow down to stay on them (ok the waves might not be going directly downwind so you can sail along them on one gybe but the general principle applies)
