Barnacle solvent?

One of the small boats got left in the water too long without antifouling. We scraped off most of the wildlife but still have the remnants of the barnacles. They can be sanded off, but that removes a lot of paint. I remember there were acids that dissolve them but can’t remember product names.

I think the acids only affect the shells, the adhesive is a different story. I'm no expert but I have left dinghies in the water too long and had to deal with barnacles. FWIW, if size and schedule allow, I've had good luck just inverting the hull and letting the sunlight do the job over the course of weeks.

also worth trying might be 30% strength vinegar. It worked charms on the lichen footprints on my boat's deck, took three applications. Spray it on with a garden sprayer.

Home Depot usually has it

I use a product called Acid Magic. You can pour it on your skin but it dissolves barnacles like crazy. I watched a rep dissolve an eggshell in his hand, leaving the inside membrane intact. This is a crappy video showing the same thing.

barnacle buster works just fine on the pads as well as the bodies. I also use it to clean the reverse cycle units on my boat that get baby mussels in the copper pipes.

Mankind has been looking for a barnacle solvent ever since Grok first sat on a floating log and scraped his legs on them.

AFAIK we are still looking.

ahh not weak .. its just another name for it

Muriatic acid is one of the names for hydrochloric acid, a corrosive strong acid. It is also known as spirits of salt or acidum salis. "Muriatic" means "pertaining to brine or salt". The chemical formula for muriatic acid is HCl.

the point was about animal testing and was that particular one needed ( LD dermal )

if it was .. then was a rabbit the best animal to use / torture ( they would have had to do many tests on many rabbits to establish the LD threshold )

im not an animal libber or peta member but we should have some sort of empathy / ethics

Besides, acid spoils rabbit pie.
hmmm

technically

if you waited till the bones were de-calcified

then neutralized the HCL ( hydrochloric acid / muriatic acid ) with NaOH ( sodium hydroxide  / caustic soda / lye )

you would have NaCL   ( sodium chloride / table salt )

so a well seasoned pie with chewy bones

needless to say .. unless you have an accurate PH testing system and understand what you are doing .. do not try this at home

that probably came from someone who spilled coke on a boat once

bright-work shined and barnacles dissolved

.. coke used to have a lot of phosphoric acid in it
