J30 with Andy Schoettle at the wheel. Nationals held in Annapolis, circa 1999. Easiest jybes I've ever made. Just a nice sunny day up front.

In back; way, way back... lots of crash & burn mayhem. Didn't know what their problem was. We were solid.

In really heavy air, the driver makes the boat.

Benetubs have a speed limit: 7 knots up and 7 knots down. Someone hit 13 and change in one once but that was (literally) in a Hurricane.
the abouve is a mis-informede statmente frome anon benetowe sailore. :)
Too true snaggle toof...I've been on a delivery on a 36.7 that averaged 12 kts for 20 hours down Erie under main & 3, top speed of...never mind no one would believe me...but it was shocking.

Er-- Do J30s come with wheel steering?

It's been said a million times, but Moore 24 is an amazing heavy air boat.

DH farallones this year it blew 53 in the pre start. Only 8 out of 58 boats actually sailed the course and we won he overall, keeping 40 footers honest upwind in30. Boat for boat. Not to brag, because a lot of it was the boat not the sailor. They really are that good. It was the smallest boat in the fleet too.

And once you learn to drive that boat, you can drive it even solo in 30 with a chute up. Was in like 4th in class in SHTP this year until it started blowing the last 3 days and the boat just took off and corrected out in class. I only once had to drop the chute because it was too windy and that wasn't the boats fault, I was just too sleep deprived. Moores are really controllable in heavy air with a chute

And on my 400 mile qualifier I spent 24 hours In a gale and while it was not comfortable, the boat took great care of me. I literally felt safer in that boat than almost anything.

I could tell a million stories about the Moore, but you get my point. Moore 24 single best heavy air boat I've ever sailed. Period.

Although the Island Packet 380 I just delivered was the first boat I've ever been on where you could cook a full meal and watch south park when it was blowing 30 on a beam reach for 72 hours. :)

Heavy air sailing.... Good times.

But as someone else said, I would much much much rather be in a planing boat downwind in the heavy stuff than a displacement boat. Big cruising boats are downright scary in 30+ downwind

JS9000, goes upwind in a breeze like the klappers and downwind like turbo klappers! And that with only 2 or 3 crew. Check Jetstreams blogspot. Love how they scream past the big boats.

So where do you fall on the Moore being a L Francis Herreschoff design with updated construction and a couple of design tweaks?

Or not.....

I think Ron told me that. The LFH part of it.

Well, there's a thread for the light air, why not heavy? What's your fave ride when it's a-blowing 18+?

I'd say the perinial best all around is J24? Never owned one. Seen plenty of em.

You a SCUBA diver?

This thread is amazing. How are there so many people that think non planing boats are so great downhill? Best rides I've ever seen downhill in breeze are Open5.70, Antrim27,and Moore. Uphill, pick your lead mine. J35 and 44.7 come to mind though. Oddly, I think the best I've seen all round is the Antrim27. Sucks for crew work at the corners with crew mechanics though. Never seen anything yet in NorCal offshore sailing that we couldn't handle with the Antrim.
Sailing in Hawaii for the past 10 years, I've experienced 30+ knots in a variety of boats. The "most fun" was earlier this year on our Open 5.70. Rock solid upwind, and a rocket off the breeze.

This video should pretty much settle the question...

Contenders, best boat I have ever sailed upwind in 35+, turning the corner is a bit hairy (name a boat that is not in that breeze) but once that is done the ride down is very special also.

For keel yachts "Zoe" MBD 41 up here in Townsville. Very nice upwind in any breeze. Down wind for me personally would be a close rate between a Farr 30 or "Inkeeper" the old modified Stienman 66 .

So I'm reading this month's Cruising World, and there is an article that mentions a guy who rescued an abandoned boat. This guy was sailing in the Singlehanded TransPac on a Moore 24. The interview took place while the guy was driving north to pick up a delivery of an Island Packet 380. I thought that sounded familiar and it turns out the guy in the story was Ronnie Simpson. I would link to the article but I can't find it in the online version.

That was quite a good deed you did recovering that boat, as is your involvement with Wounded Warriors.

Pretty much any later dated IOR design with a pinchy ass. Be sure to fly the blooper too. Doesn't matter how fast you are going, you'll thank God you're not going any faster!
