Biden refuses to salute the Marine. How does this make you feel?

Why 4 / not on a ship?
it is / was one particular to our navy
the reason most floated was that it was unnecessarily distractive
some navies its only done for the first encounter each day

i would hazard that it has more to do with saluting within the sometimes tight confines of a warship is often a pita .. so why bother with it

.... just read steams reply
and yes
colours / sunset flag ceremonies are saluted
but other ships officers are only saluted / piped by the gangway staff when coming aboard or leaving the ship

Maybe not in the US but sometimes the air force can be the same. The standing order was to salute two people: The wing commander and your squadron commander. When you see them the first time that day.
Still return the salute if a higher rank salutes first for some reason. Definitely salute where required by ceremony (flags, promotions, ...) or operating procedure.

Reasoning was: Ain't got no time to salute all day. IIRC the squadron had more Captians than all enlisted ranks combined. Working in the flight operations zone where FOD rules banned headpieces also helped.

In the video in question the MSG sentry did it by the book. Salutes to VIPs are commonly not returned, so the drill is to hold it for a 3 count after the VIP has passed to be sure the VIP doesn't suddenly decide to return it a tick late, in order to avoid the awkward condition of accidentally finding oneself saluted.

Combination of tradition and practicality.

Sailors often have some bit of ship's work in hand. Dropping it to salute could have bad results. 2nd, tradition is to never salute when uncovered (not wearing a uniform hat), and never salute under a deck (inside any part of the ship). In the US Navy we were instructed to only salute our ship's officers when seeing them the first time that day (if wearing hat and not inside, and not busy with something that would go BOOM if you dropped it), and to salute the flag at morning colors.

OTOH when we were rafted up to other ships, saluting THEIR officers was mandatory (subject to the above) and of course ashore it's open season. It was easy to forget, unfortunately.
Thanks.

Almost as if they get (a lot of) specific training for that job.

People in the US can do whatever they like, but it would be absurd if King Charles saluted the flight attendant of his plane every time he boarded-because hey; he is CIC of the RAF.
