Bloopers

Funny that bloopers are coming back in IRC. The boat I crew on was protested for flying a blooper in last year's BYC Mac. I don't think it made much of a difference in the race. It gives us about a 1/4 of knot more going dead downwind. I believe we used it twice for about an hour each. I have to say that it's pretty fun to fly and we make a big deal about putting it up. The sail doesn't weigh much and it can be used as a pillow when not up.

The protest was disallowed on a technicality, but I think we would have won it anyway. As long as the blooper is smaller than the largest headsail it is considered a staysail under IRC. It doesn't fall under IRC's description of a spinnaker. The rule is a bit murky when it comes to the blooper. ORR expressly forbids bloopers.

I don't think a traditional blooper would work well behind the large mains on modern boats. The speed surge issue that was mentioned here would also make flying one very difficult.

GO THE BLOOP!!!

we flew a spasail (sp?) on the ft lauterdale to kw race....basically it's a staysail but cut like a small spinnaker...trimms like a kite..positive luff curve like a kite and fast as hell...i never saw one till it went up....i was sold...cool ass sail.

it measures in a a jib under irc... kinda cool.....sadly the wind gradually went forward on us the entire race so it became moot after a while...but when angles permit...it rocked

it only will work on serious leadmines that cannot plane or need at least 10' waves to get a sustained surf.
And why would anyone want to sail that kind of boat?
Because ditch diggers need boats too.

Seriously, where are all these XXknt shitbox owners and boats? "Serious leadmines that cannot plane" describes the vast majority of most fleets.

Perhaps the sailing crowd could ask for a bailout, and then we can all have UberFastPhallicSpritSportBoats.

Gov't Bailout Office: Why do you need a bailout?

Shitbox Owner: My shitbox only does 4knts.

Gov't Bailout Office: Ummm. okay...

Shitbox Owner: I want a shitbox that does 17knts. Otherwise my boat won't offset the microscopic size of my dick.

Gov't Bailout Office: Righty-o, here's your check. Next.
Shife, you're a genius!

Where is it tacked and led? Like a staysail or a blooper? Sounds cool, got a picture?

the blooper worked offshore on the express 37 back in the day. but the extra mess it made in the occasional but inevitable round down made us question its use. after a particularly long knock down, we stopped flying it at night.

one joke about bloopers, you gain a knot when you put it up, and gain a knot when you take it down.

Unless it's a pretty long leg and not very shifty, the blooper is more of a distraction than it's worth. If it's shifty you end up chasing yourself trying to trim it and steer enough by the lee to make it work well without going too far.

I promise not to poke fun at your light ass soon to destroy itself go fast rocket with no accomodations that you paid an inordinate sum of money to purchase. Further, I won't give you any crap about your efforts that are going nowhere to extablish a one design class. I won't even tease you for having to race handicap because there isn't any other place to race your failed ultra flight feather self destructo whatever.
In return, don't give me shit when i can sell my boat for what i paid for it. don't give me shit because I can go for a weekend with a sweet lovely and have enough of the comforts make sex on the boat possible without getting her stupid drunk first. At the end of a point to point race, I'll have enough water in the tank for a shower. I'll even have enough for a pot of coffee in the morning. If there isn't any breeze on the way back, I'll fire up my reliable inboard and motor at more than 6 knots until there is enough breeze to sail.

Different strokes at different times in life.
A-fucking-MEN!

Now....where is that number for North Sails.....I think I need a blooper for my '87 Shitbox-35.

As a side note, anybody got one for sale? Bonus if the luff is ~46'

Aren't they banned up in the Great Lakes area nowadays? Maybe I have a sister ship up there willing to de-clutter their sail-shed.

it's tacked to the fordeck where you'd normally tack a staysail... trimmed from cabintops with sheets run through twings then aft.

i'll see if i can hunt down a pic.....

Bloopers are not the problem, and boats on which bloopers would work are not the problem. Handicap racing used to be a far more viable and fair alternative to one design than it is currently, and it used to be a place where boats with full water tanks and sets of dishes (and bloopers) could compete against one another. People who wanted to sail the absolute latest, lightest, and fastest would find the one design that best suited their preferences. The problem is the deluging of the market with a wide variety of really crappy sportboats that have never gotten a class off the ground and never will, which results in PHRF fleets being forced to accommodate the stupid things, which means that the performance profiles of the boats in the fleet become so wildly different that the results become a foregone conclusion based on the course type and windspeed. I cannot imagine a bigger waste of time and money than getting a carbon sport boat to sail in PHRF. Get a Melges 24, for God's sake. Get a Melges 32 if you have that kind of scratch. Get a J/80 if you're more the sedate club racer type. But spare me the merits of your viperantrimthompsonblusail8308meter24, because they have none. The introduction of these boats, with no class to put them in, is what has wrecked and is continuing to wreck PHRF as a viable club-racing format for dual purpose boats. The only duality of purpose in these things is sailing/driveway or preferably driveway/dumpster.

They are not banned in the great lakes in that sister ship you speak of, that sail went in the dumpster years ago.

They're gonna need bailout money for a red sportscar and hair implants to help with the offset too...

I think the silent majority of those of us racing old beat up leadmines tend to stick to the theory of "you worry about what kind of boat you sail, and I'll worry about what I sail" and know that racing a fast boat slow doesn't make you a better racer than racing a slow boat fast... Strange how you don't hear the leadmine racers whining about their rating all the time, isn't it?

Anyhow, we've been thinking about finding an old blooper to have some fun with for a while. Somehow over the years ours disappeared from the "old sail pile" in the basement.

So, if anyone has one that will measure in right for a Morgan 27, let me know!

And don't whine like an investment banker looking at a $12.00 bonus check and try to get the RC to cancel the race every time it gets windy because your carbon-fantastic will self destruct while the 4KSBs are out having fun.

Fuck, I knew if I kept all those SC 27 bloopers they'd come back into vogue....who wants one? B) Might work for that Morgan 27?

I used to love setting the bloop on the old PJ 2 tonner as it made an unruley long ddw runs in the waves fun.
