Body modifications

the admittedly anecdotal accounts strongly suggest that there is a social, (social contagion) and/or peer (peer contagion) component to transsexualism at least for the young. It is also curious that the condition occurs most often in predominately white, upper-class communities.
Should those notions be the case, what do make of it?

Well, it certainly raises interesting questions about whether permanently altering a person's body is an appropriate response to a condition caused by a social contagion.

There are thought to be different kinds social contagion. Wikipedia lists disinhibitory contagion, echo contagion, and hysterical contagion. The only one that sounds remotely plausible is disinhibtory, which "involves a type of behaviour that the person already has some desire to engage in, but from which normally they would refrain due to a desire to comply with social norms." This is the sort of thing that happens when folks begin to be less fearful of being themselves, like when laws are established to reduce discrimination against gay folks and all of a sudden more folks self-identify as gay. Funny how that work eh.

Can you please supply us with any evidence supporting the theory that transgenderism is “caused by a social contagion” otherwise we will simply continue to snicker as you try to appear smart within your bubble of ignorance and bigotry.

Thanks for the entertainment!

Conclusion

This descriptive, exploratory study of parent reports provides valuable detailed information that allows for the generation of hypotheses about factors that may contribute to the onset and/or expression of gender dysphoria among AYAs. Emerging hypotheses include the possibility of a potential new subcategory of gender dysphoria (referred to as rapid-onset gender dysphoria) that has not yet been clinically validated and the possibility of social influences and maladaptive coping mechanisms. Parent-child conflict may also explain some of the findings. More research that includes data collection from AYAs, parents, clinicians and third party informants is needed to further explore the roles of social influence, maladaptive coping mechanisms, parental approaches, and family dynamics in the development and duration of gender dysphoria in adolescents and young adults.

Nothing in this anecdotal sampling of parents indicates causality.

The authors hypothesize that maybe causal relationships could be established between factors mentioned by parents (peer groups, social media or conflict between children and parents) but they provide no evidence of causality.

An equally likely scenario is that transgender kids gravitate towards accepting peers, seek out info on the internet, and judgmental parents who disapprove of their children's mindset create conflict with their kids.

But, I think we agree that you've not supplied any evidence to support your theory.

So can we get back to laughing at you now, assuming that's the best you can do?
