Gougeon Brothers on Boat Construction ,... latest edition of many​


Professional Boatbuilder magazine is a definitely good resource, but they are located in Maine, not Connecticut. You can access them at www.proboat.com. You college should have a copy, which is a free subscription. Get them to get it if they don't.

Four other books that you should consult:

"Use of Fiber Reinforced Plastics in the Marine Industry", by the Ship Structure Committee (an independent organization), Publication SSC-360, 1990.

"Design Guide for Marine Applications of Composites", also for the Ship Structure Committee, Final Report, Contract DTCG23-94-R-E01010, published by Eric Greene Associates, Inc., 86 River Drive, Annapolis, MD 21403.

"Modern Boatbuilding Materials and Methods", by Steve Sleight, published by International Marine Publishing (now part of McGraw Hill), copyright 1986.

"Fiberglass Boat Design and Construction", by Robert C. Scott, 1973, originally published by John DeGraff. Now I think it is published by The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, or at least, it is available through
them

As long as you employ them, they will take you seriously. When I was working at a composite engineering firm, most of our work was mini maxis, TP52s and other Grand Prix boats, however we had quite a lot of odd projects in the mix too. Designing composite structures is specialized and challenging, and as such it’s generally interesting a welcome to have something different come across your desk.

You can also research vacuum bagging and vacuum infusion techniques. Both techniques assure the proper amount of laminate, resin and core for the optimal balance of materials for the application. The hull, bulkheads, stringers, panels and interior joinery can all be done in this manner. It would still be considered a foam sandwich layup minus the air voids and improperly distributed resin to ‘glass ratios. Different composite materials perform specific functions and determining the proper cloth and resin system and amounts per square foot is very important. There is a YouTube channel that explains composite materials in depth. If I find it I’ll link it here.

i mean...I've helped y father build his 11m plywood cold molded boat but it was so long ago- it most certainly does not count at all.

I'll think about it, but their pricing is rough and if I'll take into account the fact that I want to build my boat myself-it will probably feel like cheating to me, I thought about consulting them after i get my plans ready tho...

i have a mate..composite engineer who worked with two round the world racers and two Americas cup programs

seems that there are no rules..only guidelines

he spoke highly of Russel, the engineer at Bruce Farr

when you want to eliminate parasitic weight and refine a structure you are working in uncharted waters…plenty of stuff blew up

the problem is- most of engineers fuck right off as soon as they find out that i'm russian

I'm not trying to shame anyone or anything, people believe what they believe, but this is adding a lot of frustration to the process.
