Brazil scuttled aircraft carrier, 9 tons of asbestos and whatnot

The fact that we’re joking about it leads me to believe I’m not the only one who doesn’t know. I’m an avid diver, and definitely don’t want to harm the ocean critters. That’s why I’m honestly asking.

I think the ones without lungs will be fine...

Brazil did just fine.

No, we did not.

We (the state) own Petrobras, one of the largest and most technologically advanced oil companies in the world, a leader in deep-water technology. In fact, 95% of its production comes from deepwater and ultra-deepwater wells. It is largely built on national technology, and national suppliers.

We build our own ships and platforms.

We have dry docks big enough for the aircraft carrier.

The navy is building its own nuclear submarine.

We recently built our second particle accelerator.

Of course we can plug a hole in a ship!

Not to mention that we could have paid for a semi-submersible ship to come here and pick up the trash.

That we don't even know what it is. Asbestos is the only known hazardous material, because no survey has been done. There are an estimated 200 tons of PCBs, for example. Unlike all other controlled sinking, this ship was not thoroughly cleaned and prepared for sinking.

We just didn't care, nor were we proud enough not to dump our shit in everyone's ocean.

The whole thing is fishy, secretive, and possibly illegal.

A Saudi company offered to buy the doomed ship on Monday. They would send a heavy lift ship that would arrive here in 10 days, lift the aircraft carrier and carry it safely to be dismantled.

So Indian kids can do the work? Seems like sinking it was the best option.

Thanks. That’s why I was wondering if it was really as big a deal as the media was hyping it to be. I’m not a fan of dumping shit in the ocean, but like seeing cleaned up ships intentionally sunk. A previous employer already exposed me to so much asbestos, I’m probably doomed anyway. I’ll volunteer to clean the boat! Lol!

Yeah, I'm in that boat but I am no longer volunteering! I also always too the best steps I could to protect my health, hearing etc etc despite the impatience and occasional rebukes from bosses. I would strongly suggest that anybody who isn't facing starvation otherwise put a very high value on their health!

When I was young and stupid, I didn’t think twice about it. The company I worked for was clearing out an ancient warehouse to tear it down. I spent the summer driving a forklift around that building while all the specialists were removing the asbestos. They were in full on hazmat suits. I had safety glasses.

Luckily, my father was pretty smart about this stuff and was good with safety measures working on home projects (including asbestos brake shoes BTW). He was a PhD chemist after being in the military, and knew all about the hazards even back then. For example, he kept a small bottle of carbon-tet for cleaning stuff -BUT- insisted on no exposure to skin or fumes. Occasionally he'd joke about it but his usual approach was to smack me and say "You want to find out what getting hurt really means, fuck around with this stuff."

It might not seem like it, but I had very good early influences in life (other than all the goddam profanity and shit).

I found myself getting cut off from my Dad's college funding (he didn't want me to become a yacht designer...) and had to go to the University Job board to make some cash until I could head down to the Gulf and get a fishing job over the summer. Just over spring quarter and the only thing they had for me was 'Kudzu Eradicator'. The pay was minimal and I asked what herbicide I would be applying. They gave me the full chemical name and showed me the back pack garden sprayer unit and a face mask. A paper suit and some gloves rounded out the gear. Now Kudzu is really persistent stuff and can pull down a barn in a matter of months. I wrote down the full name of the herbicide and long before Google I managed to find out that the common name for it was 'Agent Orange'!
I ended up banging nails on new campus housing and never came near the Kudzu or Agent Orange...

I’m just a moron. I never even mentioned to my parents what work had me doing. I’m just guessing they wouldn’t have approved seeing as my dad’s a doctor and mom was a nurse.

Sunk in 16,000 feet of water. Not a lot of fish at that depth, with or without lungs.
Are you stupid? Ever hear of Ocean Currents that well up to the surface?

Everyone is allowed to pollute except the US. We are so evil for cleaning up (sometimes only trying) our past messes.
If you have not watched the 2019 movie Dark Waters with Mark Ruffalo, watch it. F'ing amazing and it is a very recent thing. It came out right before the Covid lock downs so it never made the money expected. Here is the trailer.

The US army, navy and air force are nothing better than this. Where is the outrage over that?
All over the Arctic do you find US bases that have been abandoned either at the end of the second world war or the end of the cold war. Barrels with oil and chemicals are rusting through and leaking into the soil, asbestos everywhere, rusting away equipment, undetonated explosives. Heck there is even a nuclear warhead missing somewhere in North Western Greenland.

Greenland, hell, there's a nuke that dropped into the swamp about an hour's drive from my house.

For years, I'd read that one is still down there, as safe there as anyplace else but apparently the uranium "bullet & block" have been found and taken away.
