Ignorance or wilful misrepresentation of the single market was the binding thread in a triple fallacy in the economic case for leaving the EU. First, Europe was dismissed as the dotard of the global economy, sclerotic and declining. The real prize was therefore trade deals with rising powers further afield. Second, Britain wouldn’t lose the benefits of the single market anyway, because EU businesses would lobby to retain access to UK consumers. Third, the cost of regulatory compliance with EU rules was greater than any benefit of membership.

No-one need take lessons in economics from the clueless Brits.
On that basis Ireland should be overwhelmed by immigrating Germans

Ignorance or wilful misrepresentation
LeoV you do crack me up at times. That Swiss style re entry was a made up bit of gossip by a Sunday Times journalist who said it had come from Hunt directly. Both Hunt and Sunak deny it was ever so. If Hunt is getting his Remainer missives out there, then one can only presume his days at the treasury is going to be short or Sunaks even shorter as PM.

Luxembourg is by far the richest EU country by that measure. Thanks to Jean-Claude Junker who as Prime Minister made sure it was a tax haven for big global companies. It is no surprise Ireland is right up there as likewise it's a tax haven for Apple, Google etc

The pattern of British failure is clear over decades now.

Are you saying that all Britain had to do to succeed in the same way was to foster tax haven-hood? Then why didn't it? Could it be terminal incompetence?

Sadly you are probably correct, but then I guess their one endearing feature you can't argue with is their ability to stand up for the underdogs like the Ukraine, unlike the likes of Germany who promise all and all that promise is, is largely lip talk.

A question Blether, now that Germany is going to have to pay world market rates for its energy supplies and much of its economy is based on cheap gas supplies, do you think Germany is going to go into a deep recession ?

This map is intriguing to me! GDP per capita per region normalized to eu average in 2019 before pandemic brexit and war bite: I leave this here with you learned gentlemen for future reference.
2019.jpg

green belt from Trieste to IJmuiden is remarkable.
Berlin is the only capital not sitting in a green blop ;-)
What's wrong with Cornwall? I quite like Cornwall. You Brits should invest in Cornwall

I see that you are always very interested in problems of Germany.
In that regard you sound like many (older) german people.
They really love to speculate about the next big massive crisis.
There is no hope at all...

And then things mostly go along in their normal boring way...
It´s disgusting...;-)

This! Had a cup of tea with my old german stepdad yesterday and he was rambling nonstop about the german economy and society both will apparently collapse monday.

I couldn't really concentrate on his whinging because our orderbook is mental and we start working with two shifts in january and my brain races with questions to solve ;-)

We don't let people vote in elections until they reached 16 years because we are concerned they may vote for selfish nonsense. I propose we take away the vote from people in their last 16 years.

Could not agree more. This is a political thread and that's where it should be.

As for "redcoats" the UK just wants to be like the vast majority of other countries in the world and NOT be part of a political project to create a superstate

GDP per capita in graphic form. As I noted earlier Luxembourg is top. A small country with a large financial sector with dubious tax practices. One problem with this statistic is that it doesn't account for the huge number of people who work in Luxembourg but live in another country.

As you can see in this chart Germany/France/UK much of a muchness in global terms

No. I did not suggest that at all. I simply pointed out why Luxembourg is the world's #1 country in terms of gdp/capita (also see my other post about why that is misleading).

What works for a small country like Luxembourg or Ireland won't scale up to a large country like UK.
