Hey Schooner

Quite likely as some folks want to spend some time with the VX in New Orleans in Sept.

Brian

Hey Soley,

The molds will be ready to produce the first prototype early May, and sailing June. We will be in Newport as part of the tour, and would love to have you come give us your impressions.

Best R, Brian

So the sail plan on the website is the ClubSport plan right? So what would the SuperSport Sail plan look like?

According to Brian's words of wisdom above I am a bit lardy for the VX but I would love to give the SS version a go!

So how far along is the build of the prototype?
How about a quick trip to the SA regatta at the end of Sept Brian. Be great to see you.

Yeah, it looks like a cool boat. And if it really ends up being priced at a competitive point then it might be high on my list someday

I'm glad a boat designer, Brian Bennett, is designing another sport boat.

The 640 is a great boat.

The VX is a different animal.

Jesus, TA, are you that much of a fuck wit?! Before dragging an inocent man through the mud, why the hell don't you speak to him and find out what he's like?! Obviously ten times the man you are. You go off half cocked time and time again causing more damage and fracture in our sport than anyone i know. Youre doing a farken good job of picking off the offshore boats one at a time here in Perth and now you're hell bent on creating division in the vipers - and you haven't even got one (or probably even sailed one yet). You give Australians a bad name.

Which sportsboat do you sail on again?

Until you do, why dont you just shut up?
At this very moment I am concentrating on an offshore program and having a break from sportsboats, as I cant sail on as much as I used to and help my partner with her paralympic campaign at the same time.

In the past I have sailed on designs such as; Elliot 770, Elliot 780, Elliot 7 FD, Elliot ESPX, Thompson 7, Thompson 750, Costin 7, Sports 8 plus some others I cant remember.

I am look towards buying a 2-3 person sportsboat after the campaign for us to sail and have discussed with Dan Tucker the possibility of installing a transfer bar so that Rach can sail it. I am looking forward to making it to Miami OCR and the worlds as I have had Viper offers for the race week just after these.

Whilst I might not be sailing a SB at the moment, how does that me any less qualified to comment? Or SW are you just doing your usual internet troll thing of finding what I post and being negative towards it. The pattern continues...

Back Off legend, we are all so in ore of everthing you do, so go OFF and do what you do. No mirror's in you place.
Never claimed to be a legend, was just responding to a question, what's it got to do with you?
Plenty to do with me, thanks for your concern.

Congratulations Brian for the fantastic response you have here for your new design and if any of us sporties can help then just shout out. We shall all not bother with the detractors in this forum.

Beautiful boat Brian! Hopefully sales are good and you can retire on it (kidding of course). Please bring one out west as soon as you can.

As for all the Viper drama, can't we all just get along?

Hi Brian,

Not sure if you remember me....Fred deNapoli, Marblehead, diced it out with you at the Viper NA's here in town about 7-8 yrs ago....friend of JB Braun's. I was renting a boat for the event....you won (duhhh!), we managed a 3rd. You and I tried to get the local fleet to accept sponsorship endorsements on the boats in the fleet, I had 3 sold that night if they agreed, but they said "NO WAY!"....HAHAHA! Oh well....small minds...

I like the new boat you've come up with here....very nice! I'm in a J/105 right now, having a lot of fun, and much credit for that goes to a Viper sailor you know, Nick Burke....he's our brainiac. I almost bought a M32, but liked the one design fleet in town, so the 105 made more sense. But....I could see possibly something along this line as a second, dry sailed boat with a couple of other villians. It's smaller than I thought, do you plan on a 23ish version? Just curious.....

Best of luck, Brian. I'd love to hear from you, know where you're at these days, would love to sail this thing if you ever have one locally, and would be happy to put you up, help out any way I can....let me know.

Hey Fred,

Yes its been a few years, but I do remember the friendships of those early years. Nick is a class act. Please give him my best. Thanks for your kind invite. As long as the my Viper mates don't threaten to stone me,(two round ones, a flat one and a bag o' gravel) I would be happy to bring a VX to MH this summer. We will be in Newport so not much of a stretch.

Best R. Brian

I was thinking about a Melges20 since I first saw them 2009... until I read the price tag that was.

"Many (most) simply cannot afford a Viper, a Melges 20 or a Shaw (and I love all these boats for their virtues)."

Time to put a price out there - even if it's just a ballpark figure. How much do I have to put aside until when???

I don't care where it's produces as long as it is quality. But with those specs it can be transported easily and affordable (to Europe).

It's a cool little boat, and best of luck Brian with creating a new niche.

We have a similar little boat called a T590 up here designed by Steve Thompson which Cobra (world's largest windsurf factory) considered to put into mass production at one point apparently, it's a lovely little boat to sail 1 or 2 up, and goes pretty well. Something like 1/2 the price of a 6.5-7m boat with 1/2 the crew and that niche is going to be a very sweet spot I am sure for some people out there, plus the growing open 570 and i550 fleets will give people a chance to play outside OD.

Look forward to seeing one when we head over for the Anarchy regatta later this year!

I think he wants to nail down a supply chain first, but from Brian's posting above you can infer a ballpark price range:

the affordable 18-19' performance dinghy range. Boats like Flying Scots, Lightnings, Thistles etc
If you want to compete with those boats, price is critical. How much does a new Lightning cost these days?

I'm not a materials guy, but can someone speak to the suitability of aluminum for the keel strut? I would have thought the difficulty of detecting impending stress failure in aluminum would have made this a poor choice, but perhaps the estimated loading isn't enough to make this a worry?

I may have missed this, but what's the weight of the bulb?

Bulb is 135 lbs (on the pdf sailplan.)

By comparison, Viper bulb is 220 lb. K6 bulb is similar.

Original Viper bulb was 185 before 2005 revision. K1 singlehander bulb is 132 lbs.

Nichols Lightning Fully rigged w/ stainless steel centerboard: $20,306.57, before options, trailer, sails and delivery. (http://www.nickelsboats.com/boats/lightning.html). A Thistle in also mid-twenties. A Flying Scot is a bit less. I think that a K6 is not much less than a Viper: upper twenties.
