Bring Back the Reach

Brilliant Guy Gurney (thanks, Guy!) photo of a reach-to-reach gybe mark in the 1990 Kenwood Cup in Hawai'i. A lost art.

With out mentioning how hungover everyone was during the gybes at those regattas.

Interesting article. I miss the old days of sailing modified gold cups and masthead symmetrical boats strung out on a tight reach. Now I tend to favor P2P races rather than the 3-day regatta of endless up and downs. Should reach legs make a comeback?

no it's a fucking bore.. positions rarely change and you end up taking away half the course... you're forcing all the boats to go to one side of the course , but if all the pressure was on the other side it's fucking wasted.. with point to point you can go in any direction you want, that's why you like it.. with O, T, G you don't get that ...

How about a simple approach?

Do W/Ls AND Gold Cups AND 'tour' courses during a regatta.

Maybe throw in a really, really far away offset mark...

So, you're saying that the wind is always exactly the same in velocity and direction, on reaching legs? That current cannot possibly play any role? That skill in sailing the boat on a reach makes no difference whatever?

This is pretty much 180 out from my observations.
