I'm having a really hard time writing this, but Burt Jones, owner of Burden IV and stalwart of the Detroit sailing scene passed away this morning.

Like his brother Warren, Burt was a larger than life character who everybody in Detroit sailing knew. He'll be sorely missed by all. That's really all I can manage right now.

Fair winds, Burt.

I haven't talked to Todd, but I was told it was an aneurysm or something of that nature. It was unrelated to his recent health problems, but at least it would have been fast and painless.

Still, this really sucks.

Well damn. That's one crotchety old bastard that'll be calling the shots on a boat in the next life.

Sail fast, Burt. Much love to Todd and the fam. See you boys in a couple of weeks and we'll tip one back to Burt.

End of an era. Could someone post the link to the video from the Mac a few years ago on Burden. Burt had some classic lines.

Condolences to his many friends and family.

Todd,

My deepest sympathies to you and the family. He was a blessing for me and the DRYA Handicapping Committee along with the carry-over into helping out the BYC Mac Race Handicapping Activities. He will be sorely missed by all of us. As a gentleman, "he can sail to weather everyday and love it even more"!!!! Let me know if there's anything I can help with.

Dont want to appear insensitive, but I dont have time to watch 30 mins of video.

Can someone summarize who this guy is (was)? Like a proper obit please?
Everyone who grew up sailing in the Detroit area spent a lot of time at Thomas Marine Hardware and knew Warren and Burt Jones.

Here is a 2005 eulogy for Warren Jones that also says a lot about Burt.

I've been away from Detroit for a long time but reading Todd's article brought back many memories.

Very sad to hear of Burt's passing--sailed many years with him when I was in Detroit and had a great time! He will truly be missed, and my sympathies go out to Todd, Mark, Denise, and the rest of the Jones family.
