My Oregon Inlet Story
Returning from the Gulf Stream with a boatload of dorado and yellow fin but no blues we hoped for, we found our mates at the dock in a universally agitated state. Universally happy to be alive. Our party of charter boat skippers and boat owners out of Charleston had road tripped to Hatteras to fish the wrecks for bluefin out of Oregon Inlet as a repeat from the year before when they hammered them. For some reason we had Texas Chainsaw Massacre on the Subdivision SUV video for back seat entertainment. We had the top three charters for the day with 4 of us per boat and were smart enough to get aboard the 61 foot “Hunter” before the rest of the party shook off their hangovers to board the smaller 50 footers. We had a great day fishing with a memorable dorado strike that missed the starboard outrigger bait and accelerated along the face of the the backlit four foot chop over a surprisingly strong swell that Hurricane Bob was bringing to blast my port side bait. I thought the Inlet was pretty sketchy on the way in with a dogleg left inside the outer breakers but our skipper handled it nicely. It turns out that the mate on one of the other boats had anticipated Bob shutting down the fishing and chased some tail on the mainland, leaving his buddy as deck hand for the day. Buddy didn’t fuel the boat, nor did anybody else and they ran dry 20 miles offshore. Boat number 3 takes them in tow and syncs the length to be two waves back. When they enter shallow water and the waves decellerate and get closer together, they get out of sync and the surge parts the line. Boat 2 is now dead in the water in the middle of the dogleg with a four foot chop and Bob kicking them at the beach. All these pros agreed that picking the tow back up and bringing them home was some fine seamanship.

That thing about wavelength changing should be remembered.

The Coast Guard does a great job, but they feel neglected and unappreciated.

Coast Guard assists a U.S., a Norwegian boater by towing dismasted sailing vessel to safe harbor in Arecibo, Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — A Coast Guard Station San Juan boat crew assisted two boaters Monday afternoon and towed their dismasted sailing vessel to safe harbor in Arecibo, Puerto Rico.

A U.S. and a Norwegian boater were reportedly traveling aboard the 30-foot sailing vessel Mare on a voyage from the Bahamas to San Juan, Puerto Rico, when the vessel became dismasted, approximately 30 miles north of Arecibo, Puerto Rico.

Coast Guard watch standers at Sector San Juan, received a Mayday call at 1 p.m. Thursday, via a VHF Channel 16 marine radio communication, from the vessel Mare requesting assistance. A Coast Guard MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter and Station San Juan crew aboard a 45-foot Response Boat Medium, responded to locate and assist the boaters.

Upon arriving on scene, the Coast Guard helicopter crew escorted the sailing vessel Mare until the Coast Guard boat crew placed the vessel in a stern tow and made way to the Club Nautico marina in Arecibo, Puerto Rico.

"The training we do each and every day allowed us to assess the sea worthiness of the vessel and conduct a tow in unfavorable sea conditions,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class David Rodríguez, Coast Guard Station San Juan coxswain for the case. “The mast hanging into the water created a dangerous situation and the crew did a great job throughout the evolution. We are all happy that everyone is safe.”

2 people and a cat rescued by Coast Guard from sailboat in Freeport

FREEPORT, Texas (KTRK) -- Two people and a cat aboard a disabled sailboat were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard on Monday near Freeport, authorities said.

At about 9:47 a.m. Monday, the coast guard's command center in the Houston-Galveston area received a call from the operator of a 38-foot sailboat saying their vessel was disabled and dragging anchor.

Video from the rescue shows one-by-one, two people and their cat were safely hoisted from the water and onto a response boat:

Video from the rescue shows the launch of a 45-foot response boat and crew members. One-by-one, two people and their cat were safely hoisted from the water and then taken to the Coast Guard's base.

No injuries were reported.

"Having reliable communication equipment onboard your boat such as a VHF-FM marine radio is absolutely key," Ofc. Juliann Kee, an operations unit watchstander, said. "This boat operator's use of a marine radio enabled us to quickly dispatch rescue crews to their location and return them safely to shore."

3 boaters pulled from ocean after sailboat stalls

Video from the US Coast Guard shows a challenging rescue in rough seas near the outer banks of North Carolina.

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter and rescue swimmer pulled three stranded boaters from the Atlantic Ocean after their sailboat stalled near the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard Station Hatteras Inlet, it happened this week about three miles offshore from Avon. Rescuers determined it would be too difficult to tow the disabled sailboat because of deteriorating weather conditions. They brought in a rescue helicopter and swimmer instead.

So join me in buying a drink for the USCG. The life they save could be...
If you have not read the Book The Skipper and the Eagle, it is a good read about the ship.

From the Amazon description:

"In January 1946, Cdr. McGowan set about refitting the former German sail training vessel for her return to America as a war prize. With the help of her German crew and US Coast Guardsmen new to sail, he fitted her for sea, then sailed her across the Atlantic to Bermuda, and home to New York. On this last leg they met a hurricane which severely tested the ship and her mixed crew. They learned to pull together to sail and, ultimately, to save the ship."

It's too easy to pontificate from a warm dry office/ That said, it looks like the boat was on her lines and not taking on water. Looks like a small outboard on her stern, mostly out of the water. Bow stayed headed into the wind, could be anchored and dragging? Or not dragging? Not sure what "stalled" means

If they were drifting towards the outer banks and would end up foundering, or if they were just plain exhausted and frightened or sick, then well done to the Coast Guard once again.
