Buzzards Bay at Night

Any reason to avoid transiting Buzzards Bay at night? Seems to be our best weather window by a mile. I don't remember lobster pots. We have AIS transmit/receive, radar, blah blah. Will probably stay just outside the channel to give commercial traffic room. Any problems with this?

Have done it dozens of times. We drop a hook outside of Marion to wait for the canal current if necessary.

Lots of lights. VHF 13 for traffic. Pretty easy, just pay attention.

Done it dozens of times with only a compass and a watch and as checkstay says, there are heaps of lights to help you out.  With all the modern toys it is even easier.  The only issue can be approaching the East end of the canal from Mass Bay.  The range lights tend to get lost in the power plant.

You should be very careful about the hook outside Marion thing. I know a lot of members at BYC, and if they know you're there they'll come out and drink all of your rum. Be especially careful with @sail69, dude has a hollow leg for Goslings.

If your rum is a worry, just head a little farther north near the entrance to Wareham River. Lots of anchorage space and decent depths. Less rum pirates.

No issues whatsoever in BB at night. Well marked shipping lane for the big boats and a lotta room.

I;m late to the party but cross the bay at night nearly weekly in the summer from New Bedford to through the holes to the vineyard with the family.  There can be a lot of fishing boat traffic and the mouth of the cape cod canal is an area I would avoid at night due to currents and traffic but otherwise it is no big deal and plenty of palces to drop the hook on all sides if you want/need to
