At 10:00 am EST Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi, Category 3 was estimated to be

1220 kilometres east northeast of Cairns and 1200 kilometres east northeast of

Townsville

moving west at 35 kilometres per hour.

The cyclone is expected to continue intensifying as it moves west over the Coral

Sea.

SEVERE TROPICAL CYCLONE YASI, CATEGORY 3, with gusts up to 220 km/h is currently

moving in a westerly direction at 35km/hr but is expected to turn on a more

west-southwesterly direction in the next 12 hours.

BOM have issued a pan pan. Didnt know that they could do that but you cant really blame them with 100 knots and "phenomenal" seas on the way.

Haven't noticed that before. Could be because that is for broadcast to ships at sea. Notice wind speeds are in knots not km/hr as the land warnings are.
You'd have thought it would have been "Securite",

JS clearly it is for ships at sea as it is a "Ocean Wind Warning"

A Pan call is the more urgent. Securite is for general important notices.

I thought Securite call was to gain the attention of people when broadcasting important information and that a Pan call was for a vessel in trouble but not in imediated danger.

From answers.com

"A system of priorities in marine radio communication has been established to ensure that the three most important types of messages take precedence. They are preceded by the words Mayday, Pan-Pan, and Sécurité. Of these, Pan-Pan is probably the least understood by amateur sailors. Mayday refers to distress messages and Sécurité refers to details regarding nautical hazards and the safety of navigation in a given area, or it may constitute general warnings about bad weather. Pan-Pan (repeated three times) indicates that an urgent message is about to follow."

all 3 require operators to stay off the air and listen

pan is very important, possibly life threatening, safety related

but there is no IMMEDIATE danger

That thing is a monster!!! The cloud mass swirling around it measures from the tip of Cape York to Fraser Island. That is over 1,600kms I think!!!

Keep your eye on this page over the next 36 hours - http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDE00900.loop.shtml

Can't seem to see a storm surge warning anywhere on the BOM site but heard it could be up to 4m!! Shit half of Cairns would be wiped out in that event!!

Or you can try the Willis Island link to radar and observations.

Willis Island radar

Willis Island observations

Yasi is going right by around midday tomorrow.

Willis is 450km east of Cairns.
Somehow I don't think we'll be getting any readings from Willis come 1000 EST tomorrow :(

My bad, will it actually go under or just get damp?

Have they evacuated the staff on the island? Or is it automated these days?

My reference suggests it was set up for early cyclone warnings, I suppose when it stops sending there is one coming.......
