This looks to be quite strong right up until landfall on the mainland.

Outflow excellent in all quadrants: CHECK

Storm Symmetry: GOOD-EXCELLENT

SSTs in the path: HIGH

Forward movement: EXCELLENT OPTIMAL

If you are anywhere in the cone of possible landfall I would be rushing preparations to protect life and property to completion.

If you live on the coast and are less than 6 meters above sea level you should seriously consider evacuating if you are in the left lower quadrant of the cyclone.

Good luck people. Take pictures of your belongings now for insurance purposes.

A mate, almost blind and 5 kiliometres from Innisfail is alone, no neighbours within a kilometre. He's hunkering down. I called last night to see what I could do. 'Oh she'll be right maaaate, was here for Larry and I'll be here for the next one. Queenslander!'

(You have to be a local to get that.)

This is a bomb, like nothing ever seen before. Maybe the biggest blow in Oz history.

Larry trashed Innisfail in 06 and it was a cat 4, this could grow to be a cat 5 and last up to 24 hours in and out. Take a peek at the relative size to Larry, it's terrifying.

SEVERE TC YASI IS A LARGE AND VERY POWERFUL TROPICAL CYCLONE AND POSES AN EXTREMELY SERIOUS THREAT TO LIFE AND PROPERTY WITHIN THE WARNING AREA, ESPECIALLY BETWEEN PORT DOUGLAS AND TOWNSVILLE.

THIS IMPACT IS LIKELY TO BE MORE LIFE THREATENING THAN ANY EXPERIENCED DURING RECENT GENERATIONS.

The Cyclone has now reached CATEGORY 5 and will continue to move in a west-southwesterly direction during today.

As pointed out by the Qld Premier, if you have an emergency at the height of the storm - there is nobody who will be able to get to you to help. You are on your own until the cyclone passes. Sobering thought.

I really don't think there will be much left of lovely Willis Island. This is one wicked looking cyclone (and I don't say that about many).
Under 4 hours before Willis feels the absolute fury of this cyclone. 60 Nautical Miles Away. Moving WSW at 16 Knots.

I have the NW eyewall passing over the island. Estimating 16 feet of storm surge. Maybe more as I do not know the depth of the water in the area.

02/06:30am N 100kms 54knots

02/06:15am NNW 102kms 55knots

02/06:00am S 102kms 55knots

02/05:56am S 98kms 53knots

Latest wind recordings from willis.

Interesting though that wind direction at willis has swung to north and around 54 knots.

Would have thought it would contniue to be S or SE and swing east and increasing given the rotation and current expected position of yasi.

Has it actually passed and slightly below? If so wind speed not at speed expected.

Or am I missing something? probably should not ask that.
