So, you want employers to be able to force their staff to stop shoplifters?
"Part of this $16.00/hr job includes confronting shoplifters that may or may not weight 150lbs more than you and may or may not be on drugs and may or not be carrying a weapon, while their partners are willing to fight for them because they've got 2 strikes. Also, you get a 10-minute break every 2 hours and a 5% discount on merchandise."

Do not worry yourselves about San Francisco or California. Any dip in economic conditions will be temporary. As always the rebirth will be spectacular. Living here is not for the faint of heart. An exodus of the wealthy makes room for the next. An exodus of workers pining for the unending mediocrity of the midwest makes room for fresh energetic workers. Plus, sharing the talent with the Red regions could reduce the economic burden of supporting their permanent welfare economies.

Like selling stock in the dips, many of the fleeing are making a very poor economic choice.

Please don’t move here. It is becoming a socialized hell-hole. Don’t even travel here. Discourage your elk from the same.
I lived in San Francisco for 25 years and I know it very well. Now I live over in Oakland. So I'm not that far away. SF was a funky sleepy town when I moved there and lived there.

But then San Francisco way overbuilt. Willie Brown, SF's version of Donald Trump, said he was going to pave it over and he did. Now there is a major hiccup after the COVID/WFH downturn. It is a major, not minor hiccup. Add to that Willie is paving over Treasure Island. Ugh.

Yet if you avoid the SOMA Mission Bay fucktrastrophe there are still really really nice areas to live in, basically the old housing stock on the west side. Fog has to be your cup of tea but Richmond, Sunset, just about anything on the west side of San Francisco is nice. Golden Gate Park and the Marina are as nice as ever.

There's a Jane Jacob's line about this, gradual vs cataclysmic money. The San Francisco that I remember was a showcase of gradual money. Maybe it was too gradual; it was a bit careworn. But the Willie real estate developments have bene cataclysmic. Way too much, way too fast. The Millennium Tower is now the modern Leaning Tower of Yerba Buena. Too much, too fast.

So, you think store clerks should.now be trained law enforcement? Should the 16 year old girl at target be expected to tackle a mob of shoplifters? Maybe teachers can work at Target since you want them all armed too.

I see being a complete "effing" idiot comes naturally to you.

You are aware that @Dog 2.0's article said:

Lawmakers in California are hoping to push through controversial legislation that would ban retail staff from stopping thieves stealing from their stores.

But the bill itself said:

Bit of a difference, no?

They were up 300% in a few years before that. a 10% discount off of insanely unaffordable is still insanely unaffordable
Yep and Helen Keller could have seen this coming. It's not like it's unprecedented. Still, the $$ at the top will keep the good places out of reach for most folks.
It's good to be the king.

I am aware of what they are trying to do, and I am responding to the fact that many retailers have already told their employees not to confront them but rather call law enforcement. Some retailers will fire an employee for doing so - for instance

If I worked for a retailer where this was one of my responsibilities, there would be a very polite hearty hi-ho, go fuck yourself - and out the door I go.

Another point - why would I ask my employees to do that and make myself liable?

It makes this law moot, but get it on the books anyway.

Lululemon is a private company rather than a political party and that firing happened in Georgia, an At Will State. This is Political Anarchy and the thread is about California. You should take that up with Lululemon.

Thank the 2nd amendment...

Oh yeah, that's right, Righties can't figure out "unintended consequences"

40 years ago, I was a parking lot attendant - with a bulletproof box around me. The instructions if there was a robbery attempt? "Give them the cash"

So robbers don't use knives, bats, or other weapons. They don't flash mob and loot either, do they?

Shoplifting and armed robbery are two different crimes in CA, though they may carry the same penalty, which is nothing in some jurisdictions.

As for the unintended consequence, who ultimately pays for shoplifting?

I am not advocating for store employees to take a bullet for the boss - I wouldn't.

Thank god my son chose another school over UC Berkeley. If it weren't for the fact you were there on a family admittance program, you should be asking for your money back.

and yet you think company policy would be for the employee to take a bullet for the bottle of booze. Given the armed nature of the populace, and reasonable corporation has to assume all shoplifters are armed.

Thank you, 2nd amendment, for make the country less safe.

Please direct me to anywhere here where I have been an advocate for guns.

If you're going to walk into a store carrying a gun so you can steal something, somehow, I don't think you are going to stop at a single bottle of booze.

Thank you, though, for proving that the average thug on the street is far brighter than you.

I was just over in San Francisco picking up a Craigslist thingy. I was out on Lake, way out on Lake. I used to live on Lake but closer to Arguello. Lake is kinda shut down for Slow Streets which wasn't a thing when I lived there.

The Avenues are nice. It reminded me of back in the day when San Francisco was slower without all the boom boom web nonsense, without an Uber running you over taking residential streets on a GPS beeline.

If San Francisco real estate prices are dropping, hell, I might move back because the foggy westside is nice.
