I have a 20 year old Porter Cable 6" RO that is still going strong. No, it's not a vacuum one, but it's not $1K either to replace.
I have a $15 AUD Aldi variable speed angle grinder fitted with a 6" soft sanding pad.

Bit brutal but I've got a steel boat.

If/when I kill the thing I'm out $15. I bought 5 of the things when they were on a clearance sale so - shrug.

If it works it works. It's not that I can't do it with that, it's that I own(ed) the exact bloody tool I wanted to do it with that allows me to get away with things like not masking off, not a problem in some places but here a definite issue, it's the perfect combination of speed/quality. So I'm pissed off. The downside to the tool lending and I'll get it back when I need it approach. Probably going to take the crochety old man approach to tool lending until I'm less cranky.

Rule 1: I bring all the tools.
Rule 2: you can't borrow them. I'm happy to help, will work for beer.

I had the best experience borrowing a massive 1” drive socket wrench and big 1 1/4” socket (to turn a die on a through hull standpipe, to re-thread it) from a boat yard recently - where you were, the one that recently changed hands.

Of course, that is a real specialty tool that you’re not going to carry on board :) . Those classic “no tools lent” signs are part of the rules that are meant to be broken - by people who have great respect for borrowed tools! (which admittedly many don’t). Borrowing that huge, specialty socket wrench and socket was a massive favour - I’d have had to buy one otherwise for a single use!

I’m going to this guy’s metal shop tomorrow - guess what, he offered to lend me tools (see sign by door)....but it’s all good, I’ve got what I need.

That sign applies DOUBLE to wives/GF's who borrow good screw drivers, chisels etc only to use/lose/abuse them.

I have a 'special' set that I loan out. The ones I don't care if I never see them again, as long as it's not when I run over them with the baby tractor while slashing the weeds.

My tool loan policy is totally arbitrary but generally based on if the person actually owns any and if so, how they treat them.

I carry a set of crow foot wrenches that I use about every three years. I'm always thankful to have them for that one spot that nothing else fits into.

They always seem to use them as pry bars, bending the screw drivers and buggering the chisel tips. Worst part, they could have easily used the actual pry bar sitting right there in plain sight.

that's a big pet peeve. I always keep my old set of whatever hand tools around for loaners. I mistakenly thought that being crystal clear about the costs of specialty tools would mean they would be treated with the same respect I've given their tools when borrowed(return it complete, and cleaner than you got it). Lesson learned.

the whole thing is sketchy. I am now a rich person....

so when a tool set gets old or rusty then I buy something like this

and empty it into a bag a like this

I then put it in a locker and hope that I do not have to spend too long messing with it
