Never seen so many fat and mostly healthy stray cats. There were about 12 in the trees, on the beach. The locals feed them. Just scatter a kg of dry food every morning and leave them to it. And that was in April. No tourists.
No mice or small birds either. Non. except some kind of huge and fierce sort of sea crow and big gulls.

And there were about another 10 inside the ruin in the shade.
Cat's are smart, they've found a niche in the tourist market and exploit it to the max.

They do look very content and keeping the beach free of mice and small birds is almost like a community service, for which they are duly rewarded. They could almost be council workers ☺️

I think that the discussion in this thread about cats being wanton, remorseless and relentless killing machines should be merged with the death penalty in the US discussion in another thread here.

There are some interesting parallels and morality issues between the two subjects.

Interesting point, in Australia they are relentless killing machines causing untold destruction of our native fauna. Yes they make good companions. No argument there. But they are not appropriate here. Feral cats, dogs and Camels are some of the problems. That’s why we are trying to remove them. it needs to be done on an industrial scale.

Sorry for your invasion of the cats! Here we must jump over a high bar in order to adopt a cat from a local shelter, and we and other friends have been denied the privilege of adopting one. FWIW our cats are indoor only, as we have bird feeders and birds, and the cats would surely kill them, if allowed.

Unsurprisingly the Vietnamese have recipes for cat…

though, it’s the relentless pursuit of the exotic which has got us into a pandemic from eating bats.
I think we should stick to eating people. There’s a lot of them around. Should be some interesting recipes. And always novel when you ask what are we eating tonight? It’s Italian…
though perhaps pussy could be on the menu… just saying.

Here the local cat rescue association struggles to find homes for all of the strays that there is a seemingly endless supply of. They won't adopt them out to just anybody, they do screen the applicants.

We used to have bird feeders as well. Then our formerly indoor cats for 6 years decided to become indoor/outdoor cats. Maybe because they were tired of seeing all of those birds outside the windows. So we stopped feeding the birds.

About 30 years ago I met an old bushie in Darwin, forget the name. His mission in life was killing feral cats. He came to town a few times a year to sell cat skin hats.

I was going to buy one, but they all smelled pretty bad.

(Some) People have no problem eliminating rats or other less cute and cuddly invasive species. But mention culling a few cats and holy crap you're a meany inhumane cat hater.

I’m good with that.
But.... Are they?
It's been said that cats will smother evil human babies in their sleep... And we all know that cats will try to kill you as you walk down a flight of stairs.....
Cats are devious creatures, that try to lead you to believe that they are cute, cuddly, warm and furry.... But they really are just miniature Tigers, waiting to pounce on the unsuspecting goat kid that we all as humans really are, to them.

Cats are badass. The Panthers of the South American Amazon variety feast on Caimans.

Outdoor cats be they on the plains of Africa or roaming through your neighborhood are inherently cool.

Dont get me started on the Magnificent wild Wolf running free in Washington…
