Paul Cayard, the alleged savior of the US Olympic team, has apparently been asked to leave US Flailing. The official word is that he resigned, but what we heard is that they had had enough of the Paul Cayard Show. And with an ego like that, this comes as no surprise.

Don't try to email him at US Flailing, his email has been dumped.

I never understood why he wanted that job in the first place, not like he needs the money.

Who will take his place? Dawn Riley? Jobson? Ken Read?
None of those will touch the job with a 10-foot stick. I expect it will be a third-rate ex-J105 sailor management consultant who loves committees, and wants to have his wife seeing him earning some coin in his retirement.

Oh, please, have mercy!
Would not be my choices, but plenty of people will suggest them. I honestly have no idea who would want this gig anyway. No money, certainly not enough money to be competitive in several classes, one medal potential sailor now. More importantly, what young person wants to have to hitch themselves to this sinking ship, especially for 6-8 years? This is the biggest indication of how utterly inept the US Sailing Board is. With a few exceptions, we have been relatively uncompetitive for a generation, and the future is not bright. The US Sailing Board needs to be held accountable, but there’s no way to do that. Can’t wait to hear what the press release says, “We have mutually parted ways with Cayard. We thank him for the strong foundation he has put into place for us, and now the job switches to a different skill set, so we will find someone who will do anything a dominatrix asks so long as they get paid”

This isn’t about coaching. It’s about being able to pick up the phone and Bill Koch takes your call.
Bill Koch runs the national lottery?

His brother runs the national lunacy, I guess it's possible...

Seriously, The title of US olympic sailing benefactor reminds me of the US olympic wrestling benefactor. Was it DuPont? Ended in murder...

get someone like Phillip Kahn to head it up
There’s no way Philippe would put himself in that position. Like was said above by P Wop, it will be someone compliant who needs the job and wants the title. Cayard did not need the gig, he’s got enough fuck you money, and his statement all but says “these people are fucking idiots who want to tell me what to do. I’m out”. Anyone of serious stature will now not even consider this job.

Took the Regional Race Officers course locally.

It was so bad I dropped U.S. Sailing membership. After 30 years. No wonder the sport is not growing.

If you do not mind as a newly retired lifetime sailor I was thinking of getting more involved (maybe). So what 2 things turned you off?
Thanks
Tom

SA has been critical of US Sailing even where it has been doing a good job, but this...this is something more serious and more flawed than we have ever seen before.

It is my opinion that the root causes of this implosion go back a decade when USS mortally damaged some of the key principles of governance within a volunteer organization. Slowly but inevitably a disaster was going to happen.

Reading the two announcements, there are two red flags.

The first is the searing resignation letter from Paul Cayard:

US Sailing Association and I had a complete breakdown on several levels...
Despite my passion for our mission and my perseverance, I can no longer work with US Sailing...
The relationship with US Sailing proved to be one that I could not cope with

It does not matter whether you think Cayard was the right or wrong person for the job, this is a clear indication of a failure in USS leadership and management skills. If Cayard was the right person for the job, you (USS) did not have the leadership skills to harness and motivate your key people. If Cayard was the wrong person for the job, you lacked the management skills to identify this, plan for an orderly transition and ensure a respectful departure. With only two years to the Olympics you have a resignation and no plan. Cayards choice of words indicates a lack of confidence in the USS leadership that he was dealing with. Before taking a decision of this magnitude, Cayard must have taken discussions to the top and talked with the USS president. This rests at the doorstep of the USS President, who failed to persuade Paul to either stay on, or to work with USS on an orderly transition. This kind of thing does not happen to great leaders.

The second red flag...see next post

The second red flag is the inarticulate response from US Sailing.

Someone used the verb "flailing". It was apt.

Messaging and the ability to communicate is an important part of leading a volunteer organization...and those skills are patently absent.

The announcement was headed "US Sailing restructures Olympic program" Well, first of all, learn how to structure a sentence.

"“In talking with many athletes and other stakeholders in that regard, and the Board believes that dedicating the necessary resources for these two valuable areas will help better position our athletes for success on the podium."

I am not being the grammar police here. When you are the head of an organization and you are addressing a crisis, your choice of words matter. You read the announcement carefully. Your team reads it. You read it again. The entire announcement is full of long, unwieldy sentences.

More importantly, if you put aside the poor writing, the underlying message has no content. At the end of the long announcement, there is no plan here and no explanation of what happened and why.

In effect all this announcement says is that they are about to "start" looking for a head of fund raising and they have not even started to think about who to hire for a team leader. They dont describe who these two positions will report to (because they dont know) or why the fund raiser will report to somebody different from the full time head of the Olympic campaign. (Surely that depends on who you find as head of Olympic Campaign)

There is an old saying in PR. If you have nothing to say....Keep it Short.

It might seem strange that USS leadership so visibly lacks Leadership, Management and Communication skills. The nomination and election process for Board members and a Association President in major volunteer organizations usually brings these skills to the fore.

But then there isnt a nomination and election process is there? That got tossed out a decade ago.
