Chasing Elegua

Our forum buddy, @Elegua has been making his way down the ICW, enroute to the Caribbean. He sent back amazing photos of the Great Dismal Swamp.

I suspect that he's too busy to do much posting or he doesn't want to jinx himself by expressing too much happiness at how things are going so I'll brag for him. My wife is enchanted by the GDS. I'm sure that we'll end up making our own trip down that way one day soon...

Dismal Swamp is cool. Met a lot of interesting people along the way.

Elizabeth City has been interesting. A local bar features axe throwing instead of darts.

Tomorrow and Friday are going to get a bit blowy, so plans to head out to Manteo and Okacroke might be off the menu.

Sorry to hear that. Didn't realize you were entertaining Ocracoke, which when the weather is good is a great stop! But when it's blowing from the NE and overcast in late October, not so good.

When you get to the Alligator River, you'll think you were back in the 1600s...

I have very much enjoyed my two trips down the ICW. Unfortunately, I didn't go through the Great Dismal Swamp. 20'+ beam made me a bit wary as some of the places get a touch narrow.

Duckweed. Fortunately our intake is about 3’ under water so it wasn’t an issue. Did bump into a snag or two.

I am kitesurfing in Cape Hatteras these two weeks, and this weekend will be pretty seriously windy out here from the north and cloudy and rainy. Fine for us kitesurfing, miserable on a sailboat unless you are Norwegian.

The entrance to the Alligator River from the Albemarle is likely not as charted. Keep a sharp eye and Follow the marks you see

I recall the Alligator River Marina right there at the bridge. My first taste of Southern food in awhile (I'd been in VA getting the boat ready) and the pax were very nice. You gat Active Captain? Man, that was a huge help to me when I delivered my boat down the ICW a bit ago

Your pic reminds me of Kipling - "the banks of the great, grey, green, greasy, Limpopo River, all set about with Fever Trees" , IIRC

There is truly nothing better than a cold to warm weather transit to all things tropical. The first is epic, and can produce children, every day warmer less cloths easier sailing etc. Good memories.. probably hold off on the cloths bit till out of ICW.
