My electrical system vs Leo's. Didn't even have shore power or a 12V charger.

OK. Just making sure it was crazy amounts of electrics. And as said might get a bit warm just above the engine!
I guess the price of S2 glass has gone up? Has carbon come down? I am sure the prices are different when buying large amounts.

Yeah but that's the engine block temperature not the air temperature in the vicinity. As long as there is decent ventilation the air temps in that space will be closer to 45C, which is OK for electrical equipment. At around 55C you start to get issues (breakers get hot and trip earlier than rated, some stuff isn't rated for those higher temperatures etc).

But I agree it's not ideal if the space isn't ventilated well. On vessels I design we try to keep engine room temps <= 50C unless for middle east where we can sometimes live with 55C.

Yachting world ONLY talks about boats that market in their magazine, as would I if I were selling ad space.

I've met cruisers on a HH boat (50ft), but zero on a GB68. Kinetic was Phil Harvey's old yard with Phil building the first boat and then moving outta yachting altogether.

Just curious as to what a cruise ready Balance 626 costs?

I don't think a quality 50+ footer is less than 3MM to build right now, even in China/South Africa.

........and the number of youtube sailing experts seems to double daily!!!!

It's really not. It's actually a pretty basic electrical system. There's one "fancy" bit, which is accommodating and providing both 120V 60Hz & 230V 50Hz AC onboard. I'm not sure why you would want to do this unless you want to be able to buy electrical consumers anywhere in the world without regard for V/Hz. Perhaps they think they are 'travel-proofing' themselves so they can plug in globally. Then the shorepower runs that V/Hz consumers by pass-through, while the other V/Hz consumers are powered by the other inverter. And I guess they have both systems wired throughout the boat?

I prefer the way this problem is solved on my boat - I have a Victron "Universal" charger which accepts any V/Hz of shorepower, which charges the batteries at any dock in the world. Then the batteries run the "invert-only" inverters which are 240V 60Hz. There is no shorepower pass-through, so there are only 60Hz consumers onboard. There is an auto-transformer connected to the 240V system to provide 120V. There are 120V sockets around the boat, and a few 240V sockets in selected places like galley and workshop. Most hard-wired consumers are connected to the 240V.

Admittedly they do have one other "fancy" bit which is the hybrid motor/generator setup which I believe has a fatal flaw - it requires an additional clutch on the drive train aft of the marine gear in order to use the engine in generator mode. It requires inspection and manual rotation for re-engagement after EVERY generator session, and introduces a certain-to-fail-at-the-worst-moment component in a critical system.

My first cruising boat's electrical system.

Kerosene running lights are a true PITA, but we lived with them for the two years we cruised this boat between Cape Cod and Fort Lauderdale and back.

I did eventually add two fluorescent lights in the engine space. Not a single wire outside the engine space. Everything manual, lights and stove kero. No instruments, radios, or electronics.

Do you mean a Balance 526? Or the Balance 620?

If you meant the 526, it sort of depends because you can get a cruise ready boat that’s a hell of a good platform for $1.8M if you are careful with the options. But it is a semi custom build so you have the ability to go as far as you want. Full carbon fiber construction, Hall Spars, whatever sail manufacturer you’d like. Yes you could easily end up in the $2.8 range if you went crazy. I’d choose their new 580 model though before going that route. Our build is well over $2M as we ticked some of the performance carbon options and stuff like 29kWH’s of lithium and 3.2k of solar.

Afaik, there is one 580 currently in build, and no 620 contracted yet - correct?

Why so much energy storage?? Only reason I can think of is to run AirCon on the hook - unless you have electric propulsion in which case it's just a token....
We also have all induction cooking, and my current thought is to make the wife as happy as humanly possible where we don’t need to be as conscientious on energy consumption as if we’d go with less. I’ve discussed this with other current 526 owners out there cruising currently and opinions vary widely as do their cruising styles. If we end up not needing it I’m okay with having spent a little too much. I haven’t heard anyone yet say they’ve got too much capacity but undoubtedly that day will come.

Don’t quote me on this, but the first 580 should splash early 2024 maybe later this year. There are multiple on order out through 2025. I do believe there is also a 620 under contract, but I don’t know that person & haven’t really discussed it with anyone at Nexus or Balance. I do have a friend who launches his 526 this summer & I’m sure I’ll hear all about it. We are heading back to Cape Town in Dec/January as well to spend a few days at the factory.

New video from Balance. More discussion and anecdotes than hard data and analysis, but it still might be interesting for some here.

There is another approach to HIGHLY customizable! :geek:

Everythings starts from here

And goes to where one wants it to go ... Like this View attachment 582664

or this
View attachment 582665

or ... take a few more OTHER cusrtomization steps ...
to come to the FINAL and the "most custom"
