Worth pimping a link, methinks: https://www.msn.com/en-us/weather/topstories/coast-guard-training-in-massive-surf-captured-in-stunning-photos/ar-BBRbkx7?li=BBnb7Kz#image=BBRbkx7_1|1  Story at the link under FortheWin, with images by Pacifica photographer Dave Rogers, It's A Wild Life Photography.

The CG was out training in the BIG surf. These guys are seriously ready for anything...

The helicopter pilots and rescue swimmers may have the headlines, but the CGs on these boats have the best pictures.

Hope I never need assistance from them, but I'm damn impressed by their preparation, gear, and service.

What is it about the American psych the requires heroes everywhere?

Why the fuck can't everyone just do their jobs FFS?

Edit: I have to explain.  Here is Australia we are pretty familiar with extreme shit.  Tick.  That pic on the front page shows a situation that should not be part of training.  It should be part of saving someones life when there are no other options.  The people who put themselves and others into that situation need to have a good hard think about what just happened.

It’s well understood that you train for the conditions you can expect. I’d much rather have my CG train in these extreme conditions when I find myself in need of assistance, rather than hope and cross my fingers they can handle it.

Plus, training is a good time to sort out the people who can’t handle it. Not in the middle of a rescue. There’s a reason that Rescue Swimmers school is so difficult.

the 44' mlb  used to be the work horse for the surf type of rescues  it was an amazing litlle boat  the new ones even more so...

glad they are around if you ever need them.    just like sharpening keeps a knife sharp.  training keeps the men and women sharp. and up to date...

Random +1. He makes a good point...but in our selfish PC-ness, breaking news, friend world, what else. Does rub a bit.
We are plain dim.

Being the hero who saves the day is part of our national identity. Just like Australia's is being a bunch of drunken hooligans and criminals who were sent packing out of Mother England.

As a former Coastie (of some 50+ years ago) lemme reveal a Deep Secret, that being the Actual Words of the official song:

"Semper Paratus is a laugh, we joined to beat the draft
The only water that we see Is when we take a bath ..."

Of course the mere fact that there was no draft back then is totally irrelevant.  Then there's the unofficial motto:
"You have to go out.  You don't have to come back."

It ain't heroism.  It was just a job, it gave me a break before college, and I learned some really good stuff (boot camp back then was 3 months worth of classes).  That good stuff turned out to be damned useful playing with sailboats.

USCG has a surf training facility at Oregon Inlet which is oddly in N. Carolina. I used to see photos of the 44'ers blasting through hugh breaking waves and always assumed that Oregon Inlet was in Oregon. Then I was introduced to the reality of the hazards of the place during a Worrell 1000 race.

I think the old CG station there that I visited that night is now closed but it looks like the Inlet is still in the news.

A few years ago A Canadian Coast Guard "swimmer" parachuted  into the Labrador Sea at night in the winter to rescue some fisherman that had been injured.

That's craziest rescue shit I ever heard of

Ok now get out Google Earth and look where the Labrador sea is

you practice  and practice some more when's there's no pressure...   when the time comes , you no longer think , you react, thinking just slows you down..  when that big motherfucking wave is about to crash into the boat, do you want to sit there and think , uh what do I fucking do..  or are you reacting..    do you want that coastie that just jumped into the water and is hooking up a lift line to the helo to be thinking what he needs to do?  no you practice that shit and practice some more..  the problem with our navies who happen to be running into a lot of shit, is the lack of..
