I’ve been sailing with red over green for most of my life

Superior visibility for other vessels and when the lights are illuminated they put a glow on the headsail allowing the helmsman to judge trim

That doesn't look legal to me, if I am looking at the photo correctly. It appears the red over green are not all around because the view aft will be obscured by the mast. Illegal, no?

The lights also must be a meter apart, or two meters on yachts of 20 meters and up. [COLREGS Annex I - 2(i)]

Inconvenient.

You either see both of the lights and then the meaning is clear, or both are obstructed. As in this example they are obstructed while you are approaching from behind (i.e. overtaking) you will just see one white. This is what almost all ships show from this angle so I don't see any problem with it.
In europe red over green is not quite that rare, at least in traditional crafts starting from approx. 40 feet.

Usually the red and green all round are found in the catalogs for vessels >20m. Glamox now owns Aquasignal which are the ship standard. Could also check Hella.

You might be better off starting with a survey on familiarity with the COLREGS first, before getting into some obscure part of it.

Agreed. I’ve been sailing for 35 years and couldn’t tell you what those silly cones mean. Lights are far more important to the average idiot. Nighttime is where it all gets spooky.

Yer, good point.
Poster has a bee in his/her bonnet re motor sailing.
4 of the 5 knowledge questions are regarding the shape exhibited when motor sailing.
Normally it’s pretty easy to work out if an approaching sailboat has the thumper running. It’s not as if there’s total carnage out there through not displaying the correct shapes on recreational vessels.
Good chance OP is a pedantic little fellow . :)
Not from the bridge of a large ship its not, dickbreath.

Anchor ball is very rarely seen in Aus. Mostly Euro cruisers passing through and a couple of local pedants.
I have never heard of law enforcement getting involved, but there is always exceptions.
Most Australians wouldn’t know what an anchor shape was, I don’t mean that in a bad way. It just doesn’t make one safer in most small boat anchorages.
No only the ignorant ones like you with zero knowledge and very limited experience. Anyone who has done the most basic RYA training knows this. But lets face it you are not known for your wisdom. So in your opinion it is not 'cool' to obey the IRPCS? You may need to google that...

Fixed. You may not know this but there are several hundreds of people with boats that do not live in the US.
I appreciate that you point out that no one in the whole stupid world has a silly cone.

I think I saw a lot of boats in QLD using one. Maybe local enforcement?
Not really, but the water police can and do fine people over day shapes if the owner gives them some lip. I know of two boats that were fined for not using a motor sailing cone. We generally joke that an inverted cone means 'I have an RYA examiner on board'. And you are right, anchor balls are becoming more and more wildly used in Queensland, perhaps in some small part to the over 10,000 local recreational boaters my school has taught over the past 25 years. I doubt Mrs Octopussy had ever heard of them before this thread, because most of us Queenslanders who know him can tell you he is an inexperienced arse clown. Clearly he has no professional qualifications.

They do want you to use an anchor ball in Australia. When our southern neighbors see this thread they'll say "Of course you must use an anchor ball"
Well not really - only when you need to anchor somewhere unusual or in a crowded anchorage where some drunk moron in a Riv 45 may run into you. It won't stop them from running into you but it will mean they are paying for any damage. Like most things in this boating lark - commonsense is required. But sadly as the old saying goes, it is not that common.

In our tidal waters in which I sail, the law states IRPCAS does NOT apply.
Though our laws are similar, hoisted shapes are not required or even mentioned. Fog horns and certain lights are. You are not allowed to anchor in the navigable channel except in an emergency .
You got a cite for that law? Where is this place, some third world shithole that is not a member of the IMO?

Restricted in ability to manoeuvre You would be manoeuvering with difficulty if you had a diamond stuck between your balls.

Wait you guys hang that shit in your rigging like Christmas ornaments and we are the ass holes? Where are you going to hang it that it can be seen more than 1/2 of the time?

How does that help anyone, ever? If you are close enough to tell the difference with your eyeball and you still can't tell what the other boat is doing, you are already fucked.

Around here, you show your boat is anchored by hanging a plastic owl. You show you are under power by displaying a woman, and if theres no owl and no women, it's a sailboat.
