Computer wireless remote screen

I have a pc with operating system Windows 10 running Expedition at the Nav station.  I would like to bring screen (and if possible the control of the pc) on deck by using an ipad. As this is offshore there is no internet connection of any kind.  Both the iPad and the PC have wifi and Bluetooth capability.  I can do this when both are connected to the internet.  What do I need to do on the boat.  I am not a techy.

Thanks in advance.

you basically have two choices

the first is RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol), which is built into windows.., with an RDP client that you get from the apple app store and install on your ipad

i have used the free microsoft app, and one or two others - just search in the app store

there are plenty of videos and websites that will show you exactly how to do it.

The other option is VNC (Virtual Network Computing).., which is not built into windows.

to use VNC, you need to download a VNC server (there are many) and install it on your PC. Then, you download the corresponding VNC client app from the app store, and install it on your ipad.

again.., there are many sources of info for exactly how to do it. it varies a bit depending on what apps you use.

As i think you have seen, one issue with some VNC apps is that they want you to have an internet connection., even if you only want to do vnc over a local network. some have a way around this.., but it's not always obvious - they call it using a "closed" network sometimes.

i generally think RDP is less laggy than VNC.., but not everyone agrees

in either case, you will need a wifi network on your boat

well, if your boat doesn't already have a network.., one simple way is with a mini router

i sometimes use one of these - a TP Link TL-WR802N 300mbps Nano N router

https://www.neweggbusiness.com/product/product.aspx?item=9b-33-704-245

it powers off the USB cable - plug it into your laptop or a USB charging plug on your boat

it's tiny - about 2" X 2" X 0.5" - half the size of a deck of cards

it's simple to configure.., or just use the default settings.

it creates a wifi network.., and both your laptop and ipad will join that network.

if you already have a network - if you are getting data into expedition from say nmea over wifi.., then just use that existing network

one thing i forgot about - it is possible to use an ad hoc network. this is essentially a peer-to-peer wifi connection between the laptop and the ipad.

then you don't need the router.

i am pretty sure that you need to have win 10 pro for an ad hoc network.

i think you will find the mini router easier than an ad hoc network

You can also use Ventus PRO. It gives you the ability to view any Expedition data on a smart phone or tablet and also gives you control of some of the most important functions in Expedition. And much easier to view and faster response times than a virtual desktop.

Ventus is very good, but if you want to see the charts, you will need a remote desktop.

i get kind of nervous about navigating near land with the remote desktop apps - they are laggy, and i worry that the network might freeze up for a few seconds.., or actually go down, without me noticing it immediately.

if you are on a fast boat, near rocks, i would be careful.
