Welp. That was fun.

I picked up the boat in the first week of November. Sailed across the Bay of Biscay to Porto, then Nazare' then Madeira.  From Madeira, we crossed the Atlantic to Puerto Rico in just over 14 days.  We're in the process of editing some video about the crossing. But we uploaded about a dozen videos from the first half of the trip for those interested.  Here's the short version. (Go to 6 minutes in the 2nd video to see a sight to make any sailor cry)

Some things went very, very good.

awesome!!! except the smoked spinnaker. that sucks. vertical learning curve i assume?
Yeah. I hadn't realized how much worse an hourglass is with an inner forestay.  It hourglassed one way around the fore, and then the other way around the inner.  Brutal.  We would have recovered but for that. After that hot mess, we always took down the inner before flying the other spin.

Once it wrapped around both the forward and inner stay and started compressing them, pulling on the rig, it was all over.  I pulled out my knife. The other two crewmembers saw me, and it was open season, just slashing away.  I think they'd always wanted to do that, and were just looking for an excuse. Seriously, a samurai sword appeared at one point.  Shit got real.

Here's a pic of the spin after arrival. 7 pieces.  Crazy thing: North Sails drove from Lisbon to Nazare', picked up the sail, and repaired it in 8 days.

A sails just don't like going downwind without constant attention. They are great right until they're not. A little by the lee, a small wind shift, helm talks too much, & all that sail area collapses into the rig. Spinnaker nets are still viable, even for asso's.

The main seems to rub against the (very swept back) spreaders when bearing off... any early wear concern?

I had a Hydranet main that sat against the spreaders all the time. No wear discernible after 5 years.

Are you missing ya old boat Shags? Design drawings in the French thread, singing it’s praises here…….
Hiya Nav,

Yea, horribly. Worst decision I ever made. Like most things, you get complacent when you have it, it's only when you don't you realise how much you took for granted. External influences notwithstanding, I should have just moved and kept the boat.

I have a good mate that is interested in placing orders at the end of the year. I've been looking at vendors for him and I am struggling not to let my personal bias seep into the decision making.

Pic of one of the contenders, the Neo 570. How am I doing   ????

We're in the slip next to Pommes Frites, Had Tumbles over for steak and shrimp in the cockpit, a fantastic guy and had a tour of his incredible boat.

Our boats could not be more different (Pogo 50 vs Brooklin/Alden SOT 48), but each perfect for her mission. So impressed with his boat and the thought that went into it.

Thanks Tumbles!
