COVID is back, says French PM​

French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne said Tuesday that "the COVID epidemic is starting again" and called for preventative measures.

Borne said that more than 40,000 cases are being detected every day at the moment, while "an increase of almost 10 percent in hospitalizations, 22 percent increase in hospitalizations in critical care and 400 deaths from COVID" was observed last week.

"This new wave reminds us: The virus has not disappeared, the epidemic strikes again, kills again," she added.

The prime minister stressed that hospitals are facing additional pressure due to an epidemic of bronchiolitis as well as the flu season.

As shown in the figure, while the number of excess deaths is correlated with reported COVID-19 deaths, in general, excess deaths exceed reported COVID-19 deaths.

Nah, it's just that we aren't perfect in listing "covid" as cause of death. Hell, states like FloRiDuh actively work to NOT use covid as a Cause of Death.

This is really sad. It's amazing how bad China fucked up their response. Among many other issues, two key problems are:

1. Their domestic vaccines are not very effective (they've refused to use mRNA) and
2. They have a lot of anti-vaxxers and many eldering are staunchly anti-vaxx. What could go wrong there?

Our new omicron specific booster appears to be performing great. In my clinical setting, I have seen pts with flu, strep, colds and COVID. By far, the COVID is giving folks the least trouble out of those four.

I visited a hospice pt the other day. An 80-something year old guy approaching end of life due to cancer. He was COVID+ and asymptomatic. He told me, "They say I've got the COVID but I don't feel anything." I thought back to working on the COVID unit in '20 and said to myself "If this was June of '20 this guy would be dead as shit right now."

It's tragic and what is going on there and it could have been avoided. The medical staff in those hospitals are going to be f***** up for a long time if not the rest of their lives

I guess you have to beat good health practices into people these days, and I don't think we are done with this by a long shot.

We're fairly done with it here in the US. Hospital census for covid has been low for months and months in my major Metropolitan area. Of course the hospitals are still short-staffed and it's a shitshow but that was because there were no changes based on what weakness COVIDA showed we had and the nurses leaving bedside.

Obviously if you're some diabetic anti-vax moron than covid is a clear threat but for everybody else it's basically normal life now

Lots of folks are back to wearing masks and we are a fairly rural low populated area compared to any metropolitian areas....
