Is there anything else as valuable as a big boat that people so routinely let die of neglect?

Ever seen a Rolls Royce left to rot in a backyard or anything similar?

Valuable paintings hung on a fence?

Collision of fantasy and ignorance
To the landsman, 50 feet doesn’t sound like much. “Honey, it’s not as big as our house but I think it’s the right size for us.”

To the sailor, 50 feet is a lot. I know of some folks, probably 60-ish, never sailed before, have sufficient money, and who bought their big fantasy sailboat, probabaly 45-ish feet long. Very steep learning curve (which is likely to trend downwards as they realize, especially for their experience level, that they’re way, way overboated...an RV, it ain’t (where you can buy bigger, to a point, without too much consideration). OTOH, the loads on big boats are big...which is shocking to discover when you don’t have any experience...)

Family friend went from zero to one of those big diesel coach RVs. It’s not the same as a boat but it was a pretty steep learning curve. And every bit as expensive as a similarly sized yacht.

I got a tour of a $750,000 RV last winter. I can’t imagine a more upside down investment, but the couple sold their home to tour the US and they are doing it. When they are done and the rv is 10 years old, it will be worth about $50,000. 😳

The neighbor bought something like that, hardwood cabinets nicer than my kitchen. His yearly fit out took longer than my pocket cruiser, even outsourcing mechanical. After 3 years it was parked in preference of a snowbird condo in Arizona. They just use it to visit grandkids now.

Exactly the reason I never understood their appeal. Drive your car in more comfort and convenience - $700,000.00 buys a lot of luxury hotel rooms.

And you don't have to stay in RV parks.

I don't understand that bow roller (not a sentence I ever thought I would write). It seems to be designed to have about 5 rollers, but the only slot with a roller installed seems to be in front of the forestay?

My sister and her husband retired about 18 months ago. They got a 19 foot Mercedes Benz Airstream RV, and went on a 5 or 6 month tour of the American west. They had a blast. The RV ran about $160,000, and they will go on more trips. I think they found the sweet spot.

The 19' class B RV is our sweet spot too. It uses less fuel and is so much easier to set-up than a trailer, you can park it in town too.
Towing the 17' dinghy it is still no longer than a pickup and 20' travel trailer.

19 feet is the size of a Ford Excursion, which I drove for several years without incident. Well, except when I backed into that guy because I couldn’t see his very small car at all.

I love the idea until I hear of some of the 'anchorages' for land yachts.

Then I think of a nice room or B&B for a few days, a light travel bag, comfortable transportation,...

That can be an "issue."

My sister & BIL planned ahead: four hours of driving per day; reservations in state/national parks; motel/hotel every few days.
