Crazy Atlantic Crossing

I was thinking he would need a way to clear weeds off the backward keel, but perhaps you are right, and the weeds will slide on by stern to bow....

EDIT, Regardless, I think the bloke is bat shit crazy!!      And will be lucky to survive...  :(
I think the waves and wind will have the bow becoming the stern on a fairly regular basis. The weeds will be shed then.

In the first single handed trans-Atlantic race Blondie Hasler refused to take a radio or flares stating that it was his right to do risk his life doing the crossing, but not his right to expect others to risk their lives to rescue him.  This should be the attitude of anyone undertaking such a stunt.  No flares, no epirb, no radio. You make your choices and take your chances. it's called personal responsibility.
I think you are right - and actually, since the skipper always has to assume the risk when one goes too sea, flares, EPIRBS, and radios should be outlawed completly. If you werent prepared in any boat, why should you expect a rescue? We can save billions and get rid of the Coast Guards too. Or maybe just let you decide who should be allowed a rescue.

If you can't handle the risk, don't do the trip.  I'm only talking about "stunt" voyages (smallest boat crossings, Cape Horn rounding singlehanded while blindfolded, Marina del Rey to San Diego race in a 470 (whoops I did that one), etc.) that should forego communication and signaling equipment.  Blondie Hassler was a true seaman and tough guy. I've seen several "smallest boat" attempts end in Coast Guard rescues with Coasties risking their lives to save some moron who wanted to break a worthless record. Either cowboy up and be like Blondie or stay home.

The "manifestly unsafe voyage" is designed to stop these before they start.

Worked pretty well for the hampster wheel guy--twice.

This guys sail plan is much more ambitious. I would have a staysail and no reef but that's just me. In this case it looks like the back fell off.

Wouldn’t be great to do all your sail handling from the saloon table , even better if the saloon table is also the dunny , nav station and cooker all in one .

So, I guess you will write the definition of a stunt voyage? You are saying that your no rescue rule wont apply to ill-prpared idiots on a typical poorly maintained ill-equiped production boat, but only to "stunts?"

Somebody attempting something without the correct equipment or skill set, based upon their own delusional idea that regardless, they can overcome all odds. Regardless rhymes with careless for a reason.

So like I said, just do away with all rescue services for recreational vessels. By definition, if you are calling for help you didn't have the correct equipment or skill set. Period. Or else you wouldn't need help.

The guy who caught his boat on fire here last weekend - why should the coast guard go out when he clearly failed to maintain his propane system and caused the explosion and fire by his own idiocy. He most obviously did not have the correct equipment and skill set. Why should we pay to help him, why should our coasties be endangered for what the idiot did to himself? He was clearly careless and even negligent.
