Croatia captain tipping question

Hello, taking the family to Croatia in mid-June to sail around for 5 days. We've barefooted for 15 years, so this whole captain thing is a bit new to me.

What is the protocol on tipping a captain over there?

5 days? And why do you need a captain? We did two weeks just the wife and I. Possibly the easiest place to charter and cruise ever! More islands and nice quiet places to anchor than you can count. Go any time end of June -July avoid August <- gets busy Italians visit in August. Even the busy time isnt busy compared to typical crowded more common destinations.

Also rare to see other Americans which is nice. But we ended up having a beer with Owen Wilson who was solo and a completely wasted Nick Noltie pretty much walked right into me nearly taking us both out.

Tipping? Depends on how cool your charter captian is, and how nice the boat is. A good Charter Captain in Croatia will only put you in a ACI marina due to bad weather and poor anchoring options like Havar. The rest of the time they should have you anchored in some awsome deep water coves often with no other boats.

When by towns watch where you swim. They still use middle ages waste disposal. Hint it all runs down hill.

Cant wait wait to take our kids.

Thanks. Don't know why I'm leery about going over there with no captain. Done the BVI's, St. Vincent and Puerto Rico all bareboat. We have a set itinerary, think we will have a combo of ports and remote anchorages. We are only doing five days because we are headed to London for the balance of the trip (also spending a couple days on either end of the charter).

Can't wait to get over there.

We're going to Croatia, too. First week of July for a bareboat charter. Leaving from Biograd. Does anyone have any recommendations where to go? Big group, lots of kids between 6 and 12 yo. Plan is to stay mostly away from marinas, maybe 1 or 2 nights max. Sorry for the hijack.

Depends which way you go? Right or left? Up the coast is to the more remote islands think protected parks.

Head down coast lots of awesome ancient cities, massive history etc. Lots of hidden deep water coves all up and down the coast. Ston was a favorite and not a common stop. But the river depth vs boat might be a deal breaker. Havar was cool get a stern tie and grab a bow tie off the bottom early 8-9am opposite side from the Quey. Hike up to the old fort above the town.

Kortula was one of our top favorites. We sailed out of Dubrovnik went as far as Havar. Some days we only sailed 30-40 minutes for a new Island and cove. You can nearly hit 2-3 islands tossing a frisbee most are that close.

Go south. South Adriatic is real Dalmatia, North Adriatic is much different, weather included. Kornati would be a good choice, if you can make it down to Vis you may want to explore Blue Cave on island Biševo. Kids will love it. Look it up. It may be sensible to leave the boat on Vis and take a speed boat from the marina / mooring to Blue cave. There is lot of local boys running the service and there is no good overnight anchorage close to the Blue cave.

Go south as others said. First day i'll recommend southern part of kornati archipelago (Žirje: uvala stupica, bay is opened to SE, or a nearby island Kaprije, village, opened to NW; in this time of year you will have more or less two winds: burja(NE) and jugo (SE) and storms from W or sometimes fron NW.))

Then you go either to Vis (towns Vis and Komiža are overcrowded with yachts...) or you stick with islands closer to mainland, like Drvenik, Brač ( i recommend Uvala Boboviće as a nice place to stay).

Then Hvar, plenty to chose there, but don't go in the city Hvar with yacht, it's not safe harbour. The marina on the opposite Pakleni otoci is usually full till noon.

Then you'll have to turn back north if you don't want to be in hurry the last day, otherwise I would send you to čedro or even Korčula...

Dijo they still do the stern tie off the rock wall and moring lines off the bottom across from the main Quey in Havar? Agreed not a place to be with weather given any anchors outs get blown out.

I messed up spelling sorry. Korcula was great. Brac was very cool also. Vis was ok but a tad touristy. Ston was awesome but rarely visited due to the shifting channel and depth. But we had some of the most fun in Ston hanging with locals.

Korcula is the postcard city and really cool. We spent every night tucked into little quiet ancorages two weeks we only spent one night in a ACI marina across from Havar, due to late arrival and incoming weather 4pm ish Last charter week in August. Lots of Greeks and Italians in August.

We were running a brandnew piggy Beneteau 323 so we could squeeze in just about anywhere without bothering anyone.

Always tip the skip. 10-15% the charter cost will make him very happy, I imagine. As per sailing Croatia; get The Yacht Week and Med Sailors itinerary and follow or avoid the group depending on what type of experience you're looking for.
