By th' jeez..... When I was a kid we used to sled to school on both days that it wasn't so cold the air froze solid, and the teacher couldn't get the stove to fire up.... On the other days we used to just use our ice skates. Some winters it was so cold, that angry words froze solid in the air. When spring thaw came around, they splintered, and dropped to the ground like broken glass.
I remember my mother thawing my father out in front of the fire place. My sister asked if he was done yet. Dad said "I'm just about medium rare" Mom said "He ain't done til I stick a fork in 'im!
In the summer (both days) It was so dry the brook trout had dog ticks on em.
I recall my grandfather trying to get the old car to town one morning. He had that hand crank spinning like a top. Finally the mule got tired of it and kicked him in the ribs. He never did like those modern wagons....

It's amusing when you find that you lived in a "period drama"

Horse drawn milk delivery vans.
Calling the Midwife.
Pay for public baths.
Being strapped or caned at school.
Paying bills at the post office.
Window cleaners with a ladder on their bike.

It's not comforting for some of us to realize that there are now more years since 1970 than between 1970 and the end of the First World War. Sheesh.

Korean?
Small hands?
I was doing survey and layout on the two new C-17 Maintenance hangers at McCord AFB just south of Tacoma, back in '97. My wife called me at work, my son had an accident, his face and nose cut up more then a wee bit - my wife and son were on there way to Harborview on the Seatle/Bainbridge Ferry.

Afternoon traffic slowed me a bit going up I-5 to Seattle. Fortunately his injuries weren't to bad, just needed some stitching up of his face and nose.

The Doc was just starting and doing the stitchingwhen I arrived at Harborview's ER. The trauma surgeon was a very tiny Korean, maybe 4'11" tall at the most. I noticed she had very delicate hands as she was tying and impressively marrying up of the jagged edges of the injury with very uniform tiny sutures.

Such nice work that she was doing, I commented that I was impressed in her fine work and we fell into conversation. She talked of just finishing her trauma surgery internship, all the while continuing her very beautiful work. Needless to say, I was very impressed. My wife and son were careful in his wound care as the wound healed. Today, one would be hard pressed to see any scarring.

A good friend, prof at Michigan and his wife were having their first kid. As he explained it to me, they routinely do a late ultrasound to make sure things were cool. The pregnancy had been textbook so they skipped it, of course the baby had breached, emergency c-section, both mom and baby in dire straits. Happy ending for all.

Two months later one of their horses gets a decent gash and they call the vet. Vet starts sewing with two threads at the middle and works outward. When asked why two threads, the vet explained that's to prevent an accumulation at one end. His wife turned white and went to the house, he follows her and she's looking at her c-section scar that had a tab-like feature at one end.

Sounds like my last surgery. Though we did all the wound care at home with the proper, same as the hospital including the latest technology dressings and wound pump - it didn't make up for a amateurish suture procedure that started at one end and ended at the other with excess on one side.

62 in April. Born in 1961 in La Jolla, CA. Grew up in San Jose starting in 1962. Other than 10 months living in PB in 1983 I have lived since 1962 in San Jose, Los Gatos (couple years), or Santa Cruz County. As of last year my wife and I have spent more than half of our lives together living in the house I am typing in. We have been together for 33 years just this last October. Lately I pretend I am retired but choose to help the company I work with cause they need it and I need to buy a bunch more shit before I start counting nickels and dimes on a limited income! When its optional it feels easier for sure.
